Gran Turismo
SCORE: 73
Noah and I spent the one hundred and thirty-four minutes to watch
Gran Turismo from start to finish. There were also some bonus features
we watched. This movie is partially based on the Gran Turismo video
game, and partially about Jann Mardenhorough. There will be spoilers in
this review. Back in 2008 The Gran Turismo Academy was founded. It was
created to allow really good gamers to transition into real world race
car drivers. In 2011 Jann Mardenborough won at Gran Turismo Academy.
As I started working on this review I did some research into things
related to the movie. Gran Turismo would have you believe that Jann was
the first winner of the Gran Turismo Academy. But research let me find
out that Lucas Ordonez was the first winner. Jann was the third winner.
The core plot of Gran Turismo is that video game players could be
trained to become real world race car drivers. That is completely
accurate.
There are definitely highs and lows within Gran Turismo. Jann had an
accident where his car went airborne and a spectator was killed in Gran
Turismo. That actually happened in real life. Gran Turismo does a great
job of showing the struggle. The relationship between Jann and his
family is interesting as well. His family was not completely supportive
of his decision to take this life path.
The grueling twenty-four hour race of LeMans is shown in Gran Turismo.
The Nissan team placed third in real life and in the movie. Getting a
team that had some video game players (real world) to place in the top
three is impressive. There is another racer that is scum to Jann in Gran
Turismo. I would expect that to be close to the real world. There are
some accidents, and bad language within Gran Turismo.
The heart of Gran Turismo is what really sticks out to me. I felt like
Gran Turismo could have been so much better without the bad language. I
do like how the coach character goes from a skeptic to a believer in
Gran Turismo. I also like how Jann grows and matures. The end of Gran
Turismo gives us real world facts on the racers and program. It is
interesting to hear more teams are using simulations to train the
drivers.
There are some racist references in some of the bonus content within
Gran Turismo. I wish Gran Turismo had been more honest in the things
they do. For example not all of the racers on the Nissan team for the Le
Mans race were from video games. Jann was not the first person to win at
that Academy and go on to a racing career. I do appreciate the struggle
with dealing with someone dying because of an accident Jann was involved
in.
