Gargoyles #1

I am very thankful I had the money to purchase a copy of the Gargoyles #1 comic book. I saw this comic book at one of our local comic book stores and remembered the cartoon from the 1990s. I also remembered there was a video game. I know King Solomon talked about nothing new under the sun. It seems all these different franchises come back in one form or another at some point. There will be spoilers in this review.

The first thing about Gargoyles #1 that stuck out to me is how the art starts so noisy and dirty. Meaning there is a lot of graphical static in a lot of the book. I found this a bit annoying. Thankfully it subsides as the comic book goes on. The back of the front cover explains this fantasy world. These gargoyles were imprisoned in stone by a magic spell a thousand years ago. Now they are in New York City and they can be free of the stone at night.

Gargoyles #1 talks about these creatures being protectors of humans. There is some debate about hiding from the humans while trying to protect them. The goal in Gargoyles #1 is to stop the criminal element. In fact there is a reference to Batman within Gargoyles #1. We meet Elisa and Goliath. Goliath is a gargoyle that is in love with Elise. They are a boyfriend and girlfriend couple in Gargoyles #1.

There are plenty of couples within Gargoyles #1. Many of these gargoyles are romantic with other gargoyles within Gargoyles #1. There are some things in Gargoyles #1 that will be explained later (I hope). One gargoyle is a robot and another is a cyborg. How did they get that way? Gargoyles #1 does not explain this. Mutates are also referenced and shown within Gargoyles #1. This fantasy world is more fantastic as the comic book went on.

Gargoyles #1 has twenty-six pages of content, an ad, Darkwing Duck preview, next issue cover, and then some pages of a cover gallery. There are plenty of different covers shown in Gargoyles #1. The price of Gargoyles #1 is $3.99. So that is the same price as comics from other companies that only have twenty pages of content. I wish the art was a bit cleaner early on in Gargoyles #1. There is also some violent content within Gargoyles #1.
