Totem Runner
SCORE: 80
Totem Runner stands out in a crowded marathon of sprinting titles. It
does so thanks to two very distinctive features. The first is it goes
all tribal. We have a tribal kind of running guy. He transforms into
different creatures. The second is the graphics. Totem Runner has this
neon thing going for it.
Totem Runner has to be seen to be believed. The tone and graphics stick
out in almost any crowd. But definitely the crowded running games. There
is violent images in Totem Runner. We can turn into what looked like a
boar to me. This can knock away piles of rocks, and creatures that get
in our way. Hunters will try and shoot us with their bows and arrows.
The main character in Totem Runner needs to plant seeds. In human form
he can drop seeds which instantly turn into grass behind us. I think we
were having to save mother earth or some religious ideology like that.
It is odd that turning into an animal offers no help to the environment.
Totem Runner is a difficult game. Especially if you want to get all
three flowers in every level. How do we get all three flowers? We plant
a lot of grass. This can be difficult since we have to tap on the left
hand side (and hold it) to plant grass. Changing to animals is on the
right, and that has to be held as well. Players have to quickly swap
between the two to plant grass and avoid the obstacles. Die and you go
back to the last continuation point.
I did not finish one level in Totem Runner without dying at least once.
I was able to eventually complete the levels. Sadly I was not able to
get all three flowers on many of them though. Totem Runner feels like a
console game. This game would work perfectly on the Nintendo 3DS and
Playstation Vita.
I really hope to see more games like this from Chillingo in the future.
They took a specific genre and found a way to stand out among the crowd.
