The Secret World of Arrietty
SCORE: 88
So you have been reading the news stories
eagerly gobbling up any stories on The Secret World of Arrietty. You
have watched all of the video clips Family Friendly Gaming has of this
Blu-ray/DVD disc. You are impressed with the partnership of Disney and
Studio Ghibli. You want even more. I hope my review can satisfy all of
the people who fit into those sentences.
The Secret World of Arrietty is about a family of little people. And I
mean really little people. They call themselves borrowers. They steal
just what they need to live. I should make a small side bar comment here
- a borrower would return what they borrowed. That does not happen in
The Secret World of Arrietty.
These little people are afraid of humans and hide. They have numerous
dangers in their lives. Things like cats, and birds try to eat them.
There are moments of peril in The Secret World of Arrietty. The movie
handles it well and we avoid any untimely deaths. The art in The Secret
World of Arrietty is amazing. I love the little details in this animated
movie. The size and scale are really neat to see.
The music in The Secret World of Arrietty is also amazing. I found a
couple of songs of great interest to me personally. The voice acting in
The Secret World of Arrietty is great. They relay the various emotions
of the different characters. The sickly boy who sees the little people,
and Arrietty have such wonderful contrasting styles that it draws the
viewer in.
Family Friendly Gaming was provided the Blu-ray + DVD combo package for
this review. There are a few music videos, original Japanese
storyboards, original Japanese TV spots, and trailers, plus a making of
"Summertime". I should note that one of the music videos is in a foreign
language. I have no clue what she was singing about. She does a good job
singing the song.
The Secret World of Arrietty is a cautious story relating to a hidden
world just outside of ours. Various concepts, and ideas are presented. I
thought about different things in relation to The Secret World of
Arrietty. One topic was stealing, another was helping those in need,
another was doing it for yourself, and another was accepting what life
sends your way.
Families can use The Secret World of Arrietty to discuss these topics
and more. One of my favorite parts of this film is where the father
encourages the daughter to avoid a fight with rats. Do not go out and
seek a fight. This is a great lesson that so many in our culture and
society could learn. Studio Ghibli has some unique films in their vault.
The Secret World of Arrietty is one of the better ones in my opinion.
