The Deskplorers Episode One Knights
SCORE: 83
The Deskplorers Episode One Knights is an interesting blend of styles on the iPhone/iPod Touch. This app has three mini games, a story, and some interactive elements. Play the mini games to earn points. Those points are used in the catalog to purchase items. These items are used in the storybook to progress the story along. The Deskplorers Episode One Knights is designed for children. An adult can complete the main part of the game in under an hour. I did that with purchasing a plethora of items that were not needed for the story. The storyline follows the doodles (or stick figure) characters who are chasing after the bad ones. They wind up in a history book, and in Medieval times. Hence the Knights part of the name.
Graphically The Deskplorers Episode One Knights looks like the kind of drawings that children would come up. Or an adult without artistic talent. I do not say that to be cruel. The drawings in The Deskplorers Episode One Knights are better than I could draw. I can see it turning off the graphic hounds. Violent content is hidden even though there are a few occurrences.
The special effect sounds in The Deskplorers Episode One Knights are fresh, and fun. I enjoyed listening to them. The story in The Deskplorers Episode One Knights seemed disconnected and choppy to me. This app does not flesh out the characters enough in my opinion. Why are the bad characters doing what they are doing? Why are the good characters trying to stop them? Motives were not explored.
Since the main game is pretty short, there are additional things to do after the game has been beaten. I found the three mini games to be interesting and fun. However with there only being three, I can see kids moving on pretty quickly. I am excited that this franchise is going to continue in the near futures. Pirates should be fun for kids.
I ran into one control issue while playing The Deskplorers Episode One Knights. The mini game where I was throwing paper balls back did not always recognize my attempts to throw something back. I could always knock a bad character off a paper ball. The robot dance game also had an issue here or there. Catch is the best of the bunch, and the one I played the most. I had fun with The Deskplorers Episode One Knights.
One of the best
features of The Deskplorers Episode One Knights is finding the right
item to use in a certain situation. There were times the game would not
allow a certain item that made perfect sense to me. If a player gets
stuck they can spend points to be told the solution the game wants.
