Robot 99

I did not know what to expect from Robot 99 on the iPhone/iPod Touch. We were provided a download code, and I decided to be the guinea pig. I was pleasantly surprised by a lot in this app. For some reason robots are falling out of the sky. It’s not raining men, but it is raining robots. Thankfully we players can save the robots by touching them. Hence the touch screen. When they have been touched by the players greatness their parachute deploys. I suppose they are not smart enough to deploy them on their own, or their little robot arms can’t reach the chute. Whatever the case may be I was more than content to help these robots out.

The graphical style reminds me of certain children's books I have read to our boys. There are some details that look fantastic. If a poor robot does not get saved, then it is quickly ushered off the screen by some force of nature. Once a robot lands, it will launch at super speed up and off the screen. There is a nice visual effect for this.

The music in Robot 99 is pleasant, and it fits the theme of the game. The robotic sounds that are thrown in here and there. I did not find any offensive sounds while playing Robot 99. I found that children enjoy this game as well.

I blew through Robot 99 in under an hour. The price is currently $1.99, and I think that is a little steep compared to other apps we have reviewed here at Family Friendly Gaming. I found a little trick to Robot 99 that allowed me to beat each of the areas easily. I found that I could tap on a robot after the chute was deployed. Doing so slows down the game, and increases the score. I could easily get two thousand points per robot this way. After a few robots I had enough to unlock the next area. For most of them. It did not take long to progress using that method.

If I ignore my little discovery in Robot 99, the controls are great. I found this app to be fun, and there is some strategy. A robot going up can hit a robot coming down. You might be saying: “So what?” Well here is the problem. The robot coming down loses its chute. Taping on it a second time can fix that, but you have to be paying attention.

Robot 99 is a fun little game that teaches players to save falling electronics, and to plan their moves. I also learned to quickly recover from mistakes. I enjoyed my time with Robot 99. I think with a few tweaks this could be a really fun app, and sequels are definitely a good idea. I could see this game working on the Nintendo DS or other hand held touch based video game machines. It was a pleasure for me to review Robot 99. - Paul
