 Rayman Origins

If you are a regular visitor here to FFG then you are well aware that my forte and passion is Sports Simulation and Transformer Titles. However, having researched the launch titles of the Vita, I jumped at the opportunity to review Rayman: Origins. Does this popular platforming series translate successfully to Sony’s new, hi-tech handheld? In a word, absolutely!

Very few games have captivated my attention like that of Rayman: Origins. From the first five minutes to hours and hours gaming, I have continued to come back for more. For those not familiar with the franchise, the game is based on left to right 2D platforming levels. Each level has a specific end point, however there are tons of hidden items and bonus levels to find along the way. One of the best draws of Rayman: Origins is how the bonus levels are necessary to unlock some of the “main” story levels. This drives the gamer to replay the levels and do so more thoroughly in order to unlock the necessary items.

The gameplay in Rayman: Origins is almost flawless. The controls work really well on the PS Vita and at no time did I feel uncomfortable using the control scheme. Completing stages in the game unlock new abilities, and new abilities often require the use of new controls. The are easy to adjust to and master. From flying on the back of a giant mosquito to swimming around horned blowfish, each maneuver is a breeze to learn.

The graphics were also great. I was blown away seeing the backgrounds and animations running as they were on a handheld device. There was absolutely no let down seeing this title coming over from the PS3. Ubisoft did an amazing job of using the power of the Vita to create an awesome looking game. The presentation in the menu screens was set as part of the game so everything flowed smoothly. Regarding presentation, the only negative remark I can make in light of family friendliness would be that of some of the female character’s costumes. For reasons that do not make sense to me, a developer decides to incorporate revealing costumes and inappropriate character movements. Taking away from the overall family friendliness of the game.

Other that what I mentioned above - which occurs only minimally - Rayman: Origins is a thrilling platforming game that is sure to be a success. With beautiful graphics, fantastic gameplay and more depth than we could ask for, Ubisoft provides a great game with Rayman: Origins.
