Choplifter HD
SCORE: 56
Finally Choplifter has come back to the
world of video games. Never heard of Choplifter before? Well it was a
game where you flew a helicopter and rescued people. Bad guys would try
and stop you so you had to shoot them. Just don't shoot the hostages,
news crew, or anyone else that needed to be saved. Thanks to developer
InXile Entertainment this franchise is back in the form of Choplifter
HD. This downloadable game is on the Xbox 360, Personal Computer (PC),
and Playstation 3. Family Friendly Gaming was provided the Xbox 360
version for this review.
The visuals in Choplifter HD look fantastic. This is still a 2D side
scrolling game, but there are 3D effects. The player will be shot at by
characters close to the screen. At that point we turned our helicopter
towards the screen and opened fire. The blood splatter and dead bodies
are extremely disturbing. Players can also blow things up, kill the
people they are supposed to save, and more. Please note that killing the
people you are supposed to save brings the player a deduction in points.
Choplifter HD acts like many military based video games in terms of
language. For some reason there are people that think the military talk
like that. I blame Hollywood for perpetuating that myth. I have talked
to many veterans who tell me they rarely heard anyone use that kind of
language. For me the crude jokes riddles with bad words detracts from a
rescue game. I would rather take my chances with the bad guys as opposed
to put my life in the hands of someone who talked that way.
Choplifter HD will set you back around fifteen dollars. So about the
same price of a used game at the video game store. There are enough
features and online modes to keep most gamers engaged for a few weeks.
Levels can be replayed to earn a better score. The controls in
Choplifter HD can take some getting used to. Take my advice and let the
helicopter auto land when delivering the hostages back to base.
Otherwise you will probably land too fast and kill one of them. I made
that mistake more than once.
One thing about Choplifter HD that confuses me is the respawning of the
guys shooting at me. I clear them out, get one group of people, and when
I come back so are the bad guys. Why is that? The area was clear. Now I
have to kill them all over again. This drove me insane. I like the
concept of needing to fuel the helicopter or it would run out of gas.
The idea behind Choplifter HD is pretty good. Go into a war zone to
retrieve those that need to be rescued. I love the idea of saving those
in need. I grew tired of having to blow others away to do it. It got
really bad when I realized the bad guys would just respawn every time.
Still the core of Choplifter HD is saving others and that is the saving
grace of this title.
