Vanguard

There are certain moments in life that are memorable. I remember my first tackle in a football game - I dropped the running back for a two yard loss. I remember the first time I played a video game through the night - it was Final Fantasy on the 8-bit NES. I remember driving from coast to coast in a few days. Okay that one was more of a blur, but that is because I only had a few hours of sleep for those days. Vanguard is a side scrolling shooter that reminds me of the first time I played side scrolling shooters.

If you have not played side scrolling shooters, then you need to know one thing. They are challenging. They are difficult. And it takes some serious skill to make it through them. Yet for some strange reason I was able to take to Vanguard like a fish to water. The retro style did not bother me. In fact in Vanguard it is charming. The backgrounds do some interesting and fun things. I enjoyed the diverse colors used, and how the areas would change over time. Sure many of the space ships looked the same, and blew up the same.

Maybe I am getting ahead of myself. Vanguard is a violent video game. What is interesting though is I only had to shoot one of the enemies per wave in Vanguard. This made this game feel less violent, and more approachable by families. The music is okay in Vanguard. The shooting special effect sounds can get old after an hour of game play.

Vanguard is being sold on the Playstation 3, and Playstation Portable for a very reasonable price. Fans of shooters will be drawn to this game like a politician to a fund raiser. I found Vanguard is long enough to keep most hardcore games entertained for a few weeks. There are enough options to warrant some replay. The game play in Vanguard is better than I was expecting. This game shakes things up in terms of how you play it. There is a voice that tells the player when things are about ready to change.

Families need to be aware of the core of Vanguard. This game is a shooter. That means you are shooting everything in sight. You are in a space ship and you are shooting other ships. I am not completely sure, but I believe Vanguard is a sci-fi space shooter kind of game. I could avoid some violence in a few places in Vanguard. Normally I had to take out at least one ship. I would honestly like to see a sequel to this game in the future.
