Transformers Dark of the Moon Decepticons
SCORE: 60
Transformers: Dark of the Moon Decepticons is one of the movie tie-in game for the Nintendo DS. As with previous Transformers titles, DS gamers get two different games – one featuring Autobots and the other featuring Decepticons. As mentioned in the other Dark of the moon titles, The Transformers brand has enjoyed a rebirth of sorts in the video game industry with last years War for Cybertron.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon Decepticons the video game is a prequel of sorts to the upcoming movie. In the Decepticon campaign the goal and objectives are to destroy the Autobots and anything standing in the way. From fighting Autobots to blowing up buildings, destruction is the name of the game. Gamers can use robot, vehicle or the new “Stealth Force” mode in their battles with the Autobots. Stealth Force is a hybrid of robot and vehicle modes that provides additional firepower and defenses. There is such an increase in firepower and defenses in Stealth Force mode that there is little to no reason to even use the vehicle mode – other than trying to get to the next checkpoint quicker. And even that is difficult due to the control system for the vehicle mode.
The graphics and presentation in Transformers: Dark of the Moon Decepticons really show the age of the DS. At times it is really hard to make out what the Transformers are supposed to be due to the pixilated and boxy textures. As far as gameplay, it consists of going through linear levels while fighting opposing robots and then doing it again. On a more positive story note, the voice acting was fantastic - as most of the movie voice actors reprised their roles for the game. This is truly the highest point for the game. I never grow tired of hearing Peter Cullen and the rest of the voice cast bringing the Transformers to life.
I only wish the
story and gameplay brought more to the table. The ability to transform
and use your favorite Decepticons is fun for a little bit. And while it
is cool to hear Soundwave and Starscream bantering back and forth, there
is little to bring the gamer back for more than one play through the
campaign. Good versus Evil is always a good theme, and that is one thing
that can be taken from Transformers: Dark of the Moon Decepticons for
the DS.
