Sonic Rivals 2

I was not very impressed with Sonic Rivals. I hoped that Sega would do turn this franchise around in Sonic Rivals 2. I wonder if the concept behind this franchise is the problem. Players compete against different Sonic Universe characters. The goal is to get to the end of the stage first. The problem is the computer continues to dominate players. Rushing through levels also makes Sonic Rivals 2 very one dimensional. Battling the different characters does not add a lot to this game either.

Sonic Rivals 2 has some great character models on the Playstation Portable (PSP). The background graphics range quite a bit though. Some do not look good when you stop to smell the roses. By the way Sonic Rivals 2 does not encourage this. This hand held game encourages speed which can be looked at as impatience. Having to fight it out with different characters becomes boring beyond belief. The main levels of racing to the finish is even worse. Early Sonic the Hedgehog games were about exploration. Sure there was speed to the game, but players could check out the different paths. Sonic Rivals 2 is all about blitzing to the end of each level. After a few worlds of this I was ready for a long nap.

Are you familiar with the Sonic Universe? If so, you know there are characters with some attitude. The stories that unfold expose players to these various attitudes. The music is really good in Sonic Rivals 2. Classic Sonic the Hedgehog tunes and sounds. Long time fans of Sonic will know exactly what to expect out of this hand held video game.

The only reason to replay Sonic Rivals 2 is to beat a level you are stuck on. There is a nice amount of unlockable content. The problem is you will be mentally numb from all the repetition that you will have no interest in replaying Sonic Rivals 2. I purchased this game for a decent price, but still felt like I wasted my money.

The game play is the biggest problem with Sonic Rivals 2. The computer controlled characters are either ridiculously easy to beat, or they are impossible to defeat. Players must learn there is only one path to take to victory most of the time. Battling different Sonic Universe characters on such a small screen is the main diversity Sonic Rivals 2 offers. There are boss levels that you will always get the last hit on. I did not have fun playing Sonic Rivals 2, and advise all ya’ll to avoid it.

The biggest lesson in Sonic Rivals 2 is to be impatient. I can not condone this lesson personally. Players are fighting against Eggman, but that seems secondary to being the first to the finish line. Players are encouraged to get there by any means necessary as well. I also think the rating should have been an E10+. Sequels are not needed.
