Secretariat
SCORE: 86
I did not know much about Secretariat
before watching this film. This horse was a little before my time. When
Disney offered Family Friendly Gaming a reviewable copy, I was curious.
Plus my youngest son loves animal movies, and I knew he would get into
it. What surprised me is how much I got into it. A happy housewife gets
thrust into a situation of running her parents farm when her mother
dies. Her father was ill, and may have had Alzheimer. She starts out
wanting to set the horse farm right, when she realizes she has something
special in terms of Big Red.
The images in Secretariat are amazing. The clothing fits the era, and I
am so glad fashion has progressed. That trainer's clothing was really
wild. Thankfully he toned it down as the movie progressed. Visually
Secretariat is very clean, and safe. War protesting is touched upon more
from a historical reference most Americans are still trying to forget.
The core world of Secretariat is horse racing, and the people that
believe in the horse. They really loved and supported one another.
In various spots of Secretariat there is some mild language issues,
along with insulting of others. The strained marriage based on the wife
neglecting her husband is touched upon but never allowed to be graphic.
The acting in Secretariat is extremely well done, as well as relaying
emotions. There is a music video including in this 2 disc package (one
Blu-ray, and one DVD) that is wonderful. The end scene in Secretariat
has some wonderful humor that has made me watch it numerous times
already.
I adore it when movies include behind the scenes features. Secretariat
has some great ones. A conversation with the real Penny Chenery, and
Heart of a Champion are two of my favorites. The deleted scenes, and
commentary are interesting as well. I can see why some of the those
scenes were deleted. I can see Secretariat becoming a favorite,
especially that final scene. I will not spoil it for you, but it is
amazing. I feel that Secretariat is worth the price of admission.
An underlying theme of Secretariat is a woman breaking into a man's
world. She faced various taunts, but she stood her ground, and wound up
dishing it back out. Having a much better horse certainly helped back up
her claims. I must admit that her husband could have divorced her on
numerous occasions but he stuck it out with her, and took over the
duties she neglected. He is a true hero that showed honor and devotion.
I wonder why her family did not move to the farm, and restart their
lives there. The storyline surrounding the horse and those that believed
in him is amazing. The neglect of the family is something that makes me
feel bad for her husband and children. In the end I came away from
Secretariat feeling it was more about her proving herself right - even
though she was gambling.
Secretariat is an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. The
production value of this movie is top notch. I hope to see more
fantastic films like this in the near future. It was my pleasure to be
able to watch and review Secretariat.
