Retro Game Challenge

Retro Game Challenge has been on our purchase list for quite some time now. It finally came down in price enough, and we scraped together the funds to purchase it. I am very glad we did. This Nintendo DS game is a trip through memory lane thanks to clones of well known games. There are also some interesting twists on some of our favorites from the past. The Game Master Arino sends players to the 1980’s (a wonderful decade by the way), and makes them defeat challenges in retro games. There are numerous ties to the video game industry in Retro Game Challenge. There are magazines that contain cheats, as well as the game manuals. The magazine contains an infamous video game magazine editor whose gutter direction is one of the reasons Family Friendly Gaming is in existence.

The visuals in Retro Game Challenge look like 8-bit video games because that is what it is based on. If you have not experienced that piece of video game history, you will be disappointed in the graphics. As someone who grew up on the 8-bit era, I remember these graphics fondly. I do recognize their limitations, but there are numerous old school games on this Nintendo DS cartridge. Most of the games contain violence, and I am surprised this did not get an ‘E10+’ rating.

Retro Game Challenge contains a lot of insider information. There are jokes that are video game related, as well as various commentary on the games from the past, and the future of certain characters. What is disappointing is some of the language issues. Retro Game Challenge could have been a much better game without them. Maybe a sequel will improve on that particular aspect.

Complete the challenges for one game to unlock another game. Retro Game Challenge includes eight games ranging from shooters, ninja action, and a role playing game. I feel that I got my moneys worth, but I am a little dismayed at the lack of real diversity in these games. It takes a few weeks to beat Retro Game Challenge, and is a very interesting journey. I would like the sequel to be released in America, but it does not look too good.

All of the games include fantastic controls, and some historic cheats that make them easier. I had fun playing Retro Game Challenge, even if it is heavy on two kinds of game play. Rally King is my personal favorite of all the games in Retro Game Challenge. After unlocking all the challenges, the games can be played on their own if your interested.

Being able to travel back in time has been explored in so many different mediums over the years. Going back in time to play video games is one that I had never considered before. Retro Game Challenge teaches us to be thankful for our roots, and to be positive instead of negative. The main bad guy succumbed to the bad instead of embracing the good.
