Rango
SCORE: 79
Family Friendly Gaming was given the Wii
version of Rango for the home console review. Players get to play the
sheriff in a really odd story. This home console game is part action
adventure and part shooter. There are numerous spots in levels where the
player stops and has to shoot the enemies as they formulate an attack
plan. The zombie area is one of the weirdest parts of this game.
The graphics have a dusty feel to them in Rango. The tones are desert,
and it generally fits the theme of the game. There are some stand out
graphics when the sheriff of Dirt goes inside a video game, and inside
the alien mothership. After enemies are shot they fall down and vanish.
Certain barrels can be shot for an explosive result. The movie scenes
which assist in telling the story look fantastic.
The music and voice acting is great in Rango. I enjoyed listening to the
sheriff's voice as he weaved his whopper. There is some commentary by
these bird characters which was humorous at times and annoying at
others. I got tired of them telling me I was going to die. Their jumping
comments were actually quite funny though.
The length of Rango is okay for a movie based game. We have played some
at Family Friendly Gaming that are really long, and some that are really
short. Rango falls into the middle of the pack. The action
adventure/shooting levels get predictable, as do the riding on some
creature and shooting only levels. I enjoyed playing Rango for the
story.
Sure mixing a western theme with alien content is nothing new. Hollywood
has been playing with that mixture for some time now. Adding in talking
animals is where Rango distinguishes itself. Rango has a six shooter, so
I reloaded over and over again. Thankfully there are power ups like a
shot gun, or a machine gun that made the areas easier. Generally there
is only one place to go next, and the game is kind enough to show the
way.
I loved getting to chase down, and stop the bad guy. I am a little
amazed that he had so many of the same looking characters to protect
him. The whole zombies part was where Rango starting getting strange. I
mean glowing meteorite fragments was a little strange, but not as bad as
the zombies. The inclusion of aliens is where Rango lost me. I was
expecting it because it was where the story was headed. I wish Rango had
more action adventure portions and less of the stand there and shoot
what is coming towards me. There are some stand out bosses in Rango like
the rattlesnake.
