Ozma Wars

A smart man would research a video game before agreeing to play it and do a review on it. Obviously I am not a smart man because I cheerfully accepted a download code to review Ozma Wars. I happily downloaded this SNK Playmore USA Corp game. I installed it, and started to play this Playstation Minis game. Ozma Wars is sort of a mixture between Asteroids and Space Invaders.

My children wanted to know where all the colors were when I was playing Ozma Wars. I took that as an opportunity to explain black and white to them. They were not impressed, and I think they do not completely believe we had only black and white colors back in the day. But it is true. At one point that was as technologically advances as we were. Video games like Ozma Wars are from that era.

The audio sound track is as limited as the video department. It can be difficult to grade a game from so long ago. Was it advanced for its time? For me too much water has passed below that bridge. It blurs together after so many decades of life. The sounds do get repetitive, and are not my personal favorite. It does bring back memories like parachute pants.

Ozma Wars comes from an era where the game never ends. See video games from the past never ended. They were competing against pinball machines so a similar concept applied. We know which of those two industries survived, and moved beyond the movie industry. The other one has floundered into its place in the history books. Ozma Wars is a decent price if you want some real retro video game play.

Certain aspects of Ozma Wars felt glitchy to me. Space ships that were flying towards me would vanish and then re-appear. They loved to do this as my shots would have connected. I question the collision detection as the game killed my ship during interactions I was sure it was safe. Loading up the fuel gauge from a mother ship was pretty cool. Swapping enemies from ships to asteroids was another nice feature. I believe many of these concepts were new to the industry and warrant attention.

After I finished playing Ozma Wars, I am still not clear as to why I was blowing all that stuff up. I also let quite a bit get by so if I was protecting something, I failed. I failed miserably if you want to know. But I went outside and saw everything was cool so obviously it did not effect anything truly important. The lesson that Ozma Wars taught me is to avoid aliens (that are attacking),and shoot them if possible.
