Metal Slug 2

Fans of the old Contra franchise will most likely be interested in Metal Slug 2. This game is being released on the Playstation 3 (PS3) and Playstation Portable (PSP). It has also been released on the Wii. This is a part of the SNK NEOGEO collection being released by SNK Playmore USA Corp. Even though I am not a big fan of the shoot everything in sight games, I can appreciate the history of this title. I can also appreciate the history of the system it was once released on.

The biggest shock in Metal Slug 2 is the gore. You may have noticed that in the ESRB descriptor. Well it is there and very prominent. In the first level this game had me shooting people and I watched body parts fly around. As a disabled war veteran there are few things that can trigger flashbacks and make me completely lose my appetite. Seeing this in Metal Slug 2 made me sick at my stomach.

The soldiers, mummies and other enemies that we decimate in Metal Slug 2 look very similar. At least within a level. The mummies and soldiers do not look alike if you catch my drift. The bosses are inventive, interesting, and intense. There are some nice visual effects, and great details in levels of Metal Slug 2. Gunfire and explosions will generally stop you from lingering on that for too long.

The sound effects for the guns are great. When my poor character would die, well it was not so great. In fact at times it felt like a sound coming out of a can. The vehicles make sounds that fit the context of the omega level war zone we found ourselves in. Special effect sounds on the menu screens grant Metal Slug 2 an arcade feel.

Two women join the men in Metal Slug 2. This gives the player four choices of who they want to be. There are enough levels in Metal Slug 2 to warrant the cost for those interested in a side scrolling shoot everything that moves game. There is also network play for those that like online action. The controls work really well, although I had some issues shooting things below me. Having to jump, point down, and shoot did not always work very well. There are some interesting concepts in Metal Slug 2. Players can have their character transformed into things like a mummy if the purple mist hits them. This was very annoying, but also difficult to avoid.

I am so glad that the real world is not like Metal Slug 2. A few people with guns can murder off entire armies. It is like something from the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. Getting into different vehicles was a fun diversion in Metal Slug 2. It made the levels much easier. The lesson in Metal Slug 2 is to get all of them before they get you. Save the hostages, and kill the hostiles. Metal Slug 2 is the kind of a game that can assist the military in training the troops.
