Max and the Magic Marker
SCORE: 83
One of the highlights of my day is to read
the new press releases on Family Friendly Gaming. I read the story about
Max & the Magic Marker coming to the Nintendo DS. I requested the
reviewable copy when it came in. I love the Max & the Magic Marker
series, and thought this game would work perfectly on the touch screen
of the Nintendo DS.
Have you ever been right about something, and wrong about it? That is
where I find myself in Max & the Magic Marker on the Nintendo DS. This
is Max & the Magic Marker. And Max & the Magic Marker is awesome.
Unfortunately scaling things down does not always look right. I think
Max is about an inch tall - if that. He does not have many details
either. The levels look okay.
There are little blob looking characters who explain how to do things in
Max & the Magic Marker. Stand in front of them to learn important skills
needed to beat the game. The music in Max & the Magic Marker is
enchanting. The bad guys have gross sound effects, and the good guys
have great ones. All of this immerses the player into this universe.
There are only fifteen levels in Max & the Magic Marker. Players can
expect to spend four to five hours with Max & the Magic Marker. That is
if you do not want to unlock all the content. Unlocking all the content
will take additional time. Extras are a nice added touch to this
independent developed video game. There are no multi-player options in
Max & the Magic Marker.
The game play comes in two parts for Max & the Magic Marker. The first
is the side scrolling action adventure platformers. Players are on a
quest to stop the bad creatures. Which they actually created thanks to
the magic marker. Puzzles are solved by collecting ink for the magic
marker. Players can then draw shapes that will interact with the level.
Create a boulder to drop on a see-saw. The player is on the other side,
and can get launched to previously unreachable areas. Draw a line for a
bridge to traverse a chasm too wide to jump over.
I like the creativity in Max & the Magic Marker. Players can come up
with various solutions that fit them. Max & the Magic Marker teaches us
to clean up our own messes. It also teaches to use creativity to solve a
problem. I am very pleased to see Max & the Magic Marker ported to the
Nintendo DS. A visual face lift would go a long way for this franchise.
