Johnny Test
SCORE: 72
Johnny Test has made it to the Nintendo DS
thanks to 505 Games. This action adventure hand held video game has
player going from point A to point B. There are secret powers and
upgrades that can be discovered, so this game does encourage some
exploration. Johnny has to clean up his very own mess. To be honest I
was not really sure what he was doing to clean up the mess while his
sisters seemed to be doing all the work. But watching them do something
would not make a very good video game now would it?
The cut scenes in Johnny Test look fantastic. Great close ups on the
characters, and bold colors. Then I started to play the main game and
was squinting to see the main character. For those keeping track it is
Johnny Test. Oh and his dog helps out too. The details dropped
significantly. I could still tell what things were, and the animation is
okay. Levels re-use much of the same graphics, but work it in ways that
helps it feel fresh.
I have not seen the cartoon before, so I was not expecting the humor
that is in Johnny Test on the Nintendo DS. Different characters have
qualities that come across as humorous in multiple areas of this game.
The music is rockish, and fits the theme of this game. Besides humor
there is also some attitude in this game that I believe comes from the
cartoon. The special effect sound for jumping on an enemy startled me
the first time, but I got used to it.
Johnny Test is a little short. And by that, I mean the length of the
game (editor: twelve levels). The levels have multiple screens that must
be completed. Most kids will beat this game in a weekend. At the time
this review was written the price was just under thirty dollars. I
personally feel twenty dollars would be a better selling point. People
tell me I am frugal so you can take that for what it is.
Fans of the franchise will most likely really enjoy Johnny Test. The
attitude, and character of the franchise is there. The game play is
solid, and there are numerous hidden items to find. Johnny Test is also
a good game for the younger set because it is on the easy side. Losing
all your health or falling off the screen resets the most recent
continuation point. Johnny Test requires a lot of jumping which can
frustrate some players.
The main lesson in Johnny Test is to clean up messes you make. I have
seen a lot of kids in this age who could use that lesson. Let me be
completely blunt - I know there are adults who could use that lesson as
well. Johnny Test contains violence as the player jumps on the heads of
various enemies, and uses powers to get rid of them. Players also save
those who have been kidnapped by villains. Not the best cartoon based
video game out there, but far from the worst.
