Icebreaker Hockey
SCORE: 79
Icebreaker Hockey takes the Backbreaker
Football concept and puts it on the ice. So you skate from one side to
the other avoiding the other team in an attempt to score. Not a problem.
Well it all depends on how well you control your character. I ran into
walls, the defenders, and went out of bounds before I figured out how to
play Icebreaker Hockey. Then I started to have some fun.
The graphics in Icebreaker Hockey are amazing - especially considering
the machine it is being played on. I was playing on the iPod Touch. The
special effects, the rinks, and the characters all look fantastic. In
fact they looked way better than I was anticipating. There is some
violent content as your character can be checked into walls, tripped up,
etc. I did not find any fist fighting while I was playing Icebreaker
Hockey which is a major sigh of relief. I know that fighting is a part
of the game of hockey - the worst part.
The music in Icebreaker Hockey is epic. It fits the theme and got me
pumped up to skate circles around those defenders. The little sound byte
of celebration never got old for me. I suppose in a month or two I may
tire of it. This game is very kind in providing hints during the loading
screens. I appreciated that, especially when it taught me something I
had not tried before like spinning.
Icebreaker Hockey includes multiple challenges, endurance mode, three
difficulty settings, achievements, and social networking connections.
There are fifty challenge levels in Icebreaker Hockey. This app costs
ninety-nine cents at the time this review was written. That is a lot of
high quality content for a very low price.
It took me a few tries to get the gyroscope controls in Icebreaker
Hockey. Once I learned them, I was able to mix in the sprinting, and
spinning. These give the player enough tools to avoid the defenders and
rack up the points. There is a timer, so you can run out of time during
a wave. But I rarely found that unless I was kissing the wall a few
times too many.
Icebreaker Hockey allows family members to showboat if they want to. It
adds more points but personally I am not big on the concept of
showboating. That is the biggest issue I can find with Icebreaker
Hockey. I love how players are taught to avoid the defenders who are
trying to be violent towards you. This is a fantastic lesson. I had a
lot of fun playing this game, and look forward to sequels.
