Howling Mouse

Howling Mouse is a side scrolling app on the iPhone and iPod Touch where players take on the role of a mouse. Yeah I was not very excited about playing a rodent either. This one howls and collects little grasshopper coins. Maybe they are icons, but they looked like coins to me. In some levels the player must avoid the owl. Other levels include scorpions that can be jumped on.

The graphics fall into two columns. There are the animals, and the surroundings. The background graphics look wonderful. The animals do not look so great. In fact they do not look like they belong. The animation is okay, but not as smooth as say a Chillingo or Bulkypix title. Both of those publishers have set the bar for that on this platform.

Howling Mouse includes thirty levels that can be blown through pretty easily. Howling Mouse only costs ninety-nine cents so you won't be out a lot of money. Still I have played other apps that include many more levels for the same price. I am not sure if a free update will be coming for Howling Mouse or not. Collecting all the grasshoppers and getting the three gold stars is the main replay value.

Trying to get all three gold stars will drive you insane. Here is the problem - spikes. Spikes will knock the grasshoppers from you with no chance of collecting them again. So while you can beat a level with one grasshopper; if you make one mistake you can not get all the stars. I found this aspect of Howling Mouse to be frustrating.

I thought that Howling Mouse might teach me a little bit about the rodent, but did not learn much. I do see Howling Mouse as a gateway game to generate a possible interest in this mouse. Understanding Howling Mouse can help us avoid another black plague. Howling Mouse could have been better and it could have been worse. Somewhere in that middle area.
