From the Abyss

There are games that I come across that I totally and completely disagree with the ESRB rating. So when I find these games, I find the time to play and review them. From the Abyss is one such game that I ran across in the bargain bin. I saw the front cover to this Nintendo DS game, and saw an ‘E’ for Everyone rating. I could not believe this game could get such an inclusive rating with such exclusive content. Look at it like this, I am doing my civic duty by reviewing From the Abyss.

Essentially this game is a hack and slash with leveling up. From the Abyss is a little more intricate than that. There is magic, and sucking the soul skills. Players use weapons or magic to destroy thousands of enemies in the eight worlds. These worlds have four levels each. The levels look exactly the same, but the entrance and exits are moved around randomly. One female character needs a lot more clothing.

Players are set in a fantasy world where these demons are invading from the Abyss Gate. The player goes through the gate to take the fight to these monsters. Why some characters have to use bad language makes no sense to me. The music is okay in From the Abyss, but the special effect sounds get old. I suppose that can not be helped when thousands of enemies must be vanquished. Since many of them are the same, I lost the point.

The thirty two levels, and at least one boss per world will keep most murderous gamers busy for a few weeks at least. Leveling up makes this game easier, and I found myself grinding on more than one occasion. From the Abyss is nice to players and lets them restart any level they have started. I hate it when a game makes me play through an entire monotonous world. So they got that right, and I am one reviewer who appreciates it. I feel like I wasted my money on From the Abyss though. Maybe it can help you avoid it.

There are two main paths in From the Abyss - warrior and mage. Either you work on strength and pummel your enemies, or work on the magical aspect. You can mix it up, but it just dilutes the waters in my opinion. The monotony, and lack of intelligence from the enemies makes From the Abyss one of the most boring hack and slash role playing games I have ever played. There is a multicard feature for two players to destroy monsters together.

I never really got into the story for some reason. Saving these people, and this kingdom did not motivate me when I had to wade through so many enemies. The female gate guard rubbed me the wrong way on so many different levels. Other characters has some edgy personalities as well. No sequels are needed to From the Abyss. Take my advice and steer clear of this one.
