Face Racers Photo Finish

You have to be very bold to release a kart racing title on the Nintendo 3DS around the same time as Mario Kart 7. Or maybe you have to be very good. Majesco Entertainment has shown a history of being both. Face Racers Photo Finish lets us take a picture of our faces in four different moods. It then puts our faces on the racer in the kart. You see the faces of other racers while playing this hand held title.

Everyone knows that kart racers are a dime a dozen. Everybody and their brother are trying to knock Mario Kart off the top spot. Very few actually pose any challenge to Nintendo's franchise. Face Racers Photo Finish is the first game I have played in years that has the potential. That potential starts in the kart racing action.

As long as I paid attention I blew through the first series of circuits. I then easily stomped the reverse mode for each circuit. Then Face Racers Photo Finish presented me with an actual and real challenge - Veteran. This mode is tough, even for experienced kart racers like myself. Getting a gold medal on that mode meant I had accomplished something. The computer races tough in Veteran. They will hit you with the weapons at the least opportune moment.

I spent some of my time with the 3D effects on in Face Racers Photo Finish. The problem is I want to move around the Nintendo 3DS. This leads to the screen and my eyes being mis-aligned. The images look wrong when this happens. I did noticed some nice 3D effects in the levels and appreciated it. There is some mild violence with the weapons. Players pick up things like missiles and mines. Launch them, or drop them to slow down the other racers.

The music in Face Racers Photo Finish is pleasant. I enjoyed listening to the tunes while racing. The special effect sounds added a comical layer to Face Racers Photo Finish as well. Seeing the face of a fellow racer in clown attire never got old. It was distracting but humorous all the same. There are only four karts per race, which was a little strange at first. Since I am used to eight.

The twenty tracks in Face Racers Photo Finish are a lot of fun. I enjoyed the various locales, themes, and environments. Face Racers Photo Finish will keep you on your toes. There are multiple paths in many of the tracks. One side has power ups and the other does not. Players can decide for themselves what strategy they want to employ.

For those that get tired of all the racing, there is also a battle mode. This has players snag weapons and try and take out the opposition. Four players can enjoy Face Racers Photo Finish locally or across the Internet. Yes you can play others across the Internet. This is one really cool aspect of Face Racers Photo Finish, and one of the reasons it gains points.

Face Racers Photo Finish is one of the highest quality kart racers I have played all year. The social interactivity as well as putting your own face into the game are some of the main selling points. I am very thankful I was able to play and review Face Racers Photo Finish. I hope to see sequels to this game in the future. Face Racers Photo Finish taught me to use all the tools at my disposal to win.
