Conan The Adventurer Season One
SCORE: 69
Conan has been a well known character for
some time now. I did not remember there was a cartoon based on him from
Sunbow back in 1992 through 1993. The Shout Factory has procured the
rights to publish the first season on DVD. I feel it is important to
chronicle the work over at Shout Factory. They continue to bring
television shows to DVD. I for one appreciate how they are giving
consumers the choice of purchasing these television shows.
Conan is not exactly know to be the most family friendly character in
entertainment. Arnold's movies contributed to that image, but Conan is
very adult in the comic books as well. So I came into Conan The
Adventurer Season One wondering how it would be for families. Conan The
Adventurer Season One comes out much better than expected. A lot of
things were improved in the franchise to make it safer for children. It
is apparent that an effort was made and real thought was put into it.
Conan rarely wears a shirt in Conan The Adventurer Season One. He is
muscular but it is not pronounced in a way that would fit under
bothersome in my opinion. Some of the female characters could use more
clothing in my opinion. There are sword battles in Conan The Adventurer
Season One. The skeleton creatures get knocked to pieces, but normal
characters rarely take damage. There is one episode with some blood. The
snake men (the main bad characters) get send to another dimension thanks
to this metal that fell from the sky. This allows them to be defeated
without bloodshed.
Cartoons from this era are humorous in how the bad guys promise to win
next time. Of course they lose again, but kids are rarely keeping track.
The voice acting in Conan The Adventurer Season One exhibits emotion -
usually of the louder variety. I was able to pick up little nuances when
a character was irritated about another character. Conan The Adventurer
Season One also contains some light language in terms of insults.
Needles calls Conan: "big dumb barbarian," on numerous occasions.
The two discs functioned just as to be expected in Conan The Adventurer
Season One. The arcing storyline impressed me most of all. The story
builds as it introduces new characters, and has stand alone stories.
Even though some of them are stand alone it still progresses things
towards the season finale. Which by the way is built masterfully and
fits beautifully. There are no bonus features on these discs. Just five
hours of the television show in thirteen episodes.
The Serpent Man wizard Wrath-Amon turns Conan's family into stone. This
is what starts the entire arcing storyline and why Conan is questing. He
wants to save his family, and stop the evil wizard. Now Conan The
Adventurer Season One also contains good wizards who help Conan along
the way. A dead one even provides him with a baby phoenix. Another
character believes humans and animals are equals. The magic gets a
little heavy for me in some episodes. The core of Conan The Adventurer
Season One is good defeating evil. So many times I wanted Conan to just
defeat the evil wizard. Maybe in season two.
Conan worships a spirit called Crom. This
is referenced a couple of times in this season.
