Captain Planet and the Planeteers Season One
SCORE: 60
Family Friendly Gaming has never shied
away from controversial products. Captain Planet and the Planeteers
Season One is a lightning rod. People are in three camps when it comes
to Captain Planet. The first camp is those that worship the soil this
show walks upon. The second camp can not stand it. The third camp is not
even aware it exists. In fact I had to show a few episodes to some
friends because they could not believe anyone would make such a
television show.
Ted Turner is the man behind Captain Planet and the Planeteers Season
One. I really wonder what happened to him over the years. He was very
successful early on, but has had some real flops in recent decades. The
most memorable for me was WCW. The first episode on Captain Planet and
the Planeteers Season One has something that is very telling. Gaia
decides she needs to reach young people with her message. She has given
up on adults. The next generation needs to be mentally molded to worship
her.
I have heard people complain that Christian cartoons beat them over the
head with the Holy Bible. Anyone who has had that complaint needs to
watch Captain Planet and the Planeteers Season One. This show constantly
beats the viewer over the head with the environmentalism belief
structure. What I find humorous is how many times they got things wrong,
but more on that later.
The cartoon aspects of Captain Planet and the Planeteers Season One are
okay. I have seen better looking cartoons from that era and before. I
have also seen worse. There is a ton of garbage and pollution in Captain
Planet and the Planeteers Season One. The cast is diverse reaching all
over the world. Captain Planet destroys various machines and even leaves
them where he destroyed them. Felt like littering to me - one of their
cardinal sins. The five teenagers use mystical rings to fight those they
deem to be polluters. At times they attack law abiding citizens.
Listening to the theme song is like being subjected to brainwashing. It
gets stuck in your head, and really irritates. Gaia is the spirit of the
earth in this television show, and there are also certain other pagan
beliefs that Captain Planet and the Planeteers Season One teaches
children. Animals are shown to be equal to or better than humans. It
shocked me that there was religious content in this television show. And
content that is in opposition of the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Captain Planet and the Planeteers Season One includes some interesting
special features. The creators explain their attempts to use this show
to proselytize to children. Anyone who thinks entertainment is not used
to mold and shape thoughts needs to watch this show. There are also some
concept artwork and more on the final DVD. The package is made on
recycled paper, which means it will not fit in your normal case
structure like normal DVD sets. I also question how sturdy it will be in
a few months.
The dialogue in Captain Planet and the Planeteers Season One is corny
beyond belief. What surprised me is I let children watch this show, and
they were cheering for what this show displayed as the bad guys. They
did not like Captain Planet, and they could not stomach the Planeteers.
Some of that may deal with the extremist claims that have since been
disproven. Twenty years of throwing away garbage and we have not used up
all the landfills. Anyone who has driven across America has seen
thousands of miles of absolutely nothing. We are not running out of
space like the environmentalists claim twenty years ago. Captain Planet
and the Planeteers are viewed as vigilantes at best, and eco-terrorists
at the worst.
I applaud Shout Factory for releasing Captain Planet and the Planeteers
Season One on DVD. It sparks debate, and proves some points that Family
Friendly Gaming have published for years. Planting trees, and recycling
(where it makes sense) are good things. It is a shame that the
environmental movement went into the religious/spiritual realm, and have
created so many problems in our society. It is humorous to look back
twenty years and realize how shrill they have always been - and how
inaccurate.
