Beastly
SCORE: 64
I have seen previews for the movie
Beastly. I understand the general premise of the story. Kyle Kingston is
selfish, self absorbed, and shallow. He crosses a witch who curses him
with hideous physical appearance. He then must find someone to love him
in his ugly physical appearance which matches his inside in the span of
a year or he stay like that forever. Sound familiar? It did to me as
well.
The details in the graphics of Beastly are lacking in my opinion.
Certain areas are used over and over again. A lot of this game is dark.
I noticed how low cut the dress is for the female character during the
dance mini game. The animations of the characters looked stiff to me as
well. Beastly does include videos and screen shots from the movie. I
could tell who the different characters were in the game.
The music in Beastly is eerie. Every so often I thought I heard someone
shout in the audio track. There are some language issues in Beastly,
especially in certain video clips from the movie. Many of the characters
in Beastly are far from friendly. For some reason the music in Beastly
really grew on me, and it fits the theme of this Wii game.
I love unlocking content, and Beastly has a lot of unlockable content.
There are numerous video clips, and screen shots from the movie. These
look fantastic. This is one of the real saving graces of this video
game. Fans of the movie will thoroughly enjoy this aspect of Beastly on
the Wii.
The game play is a mixed bag of tricks. I love how Beastly controls. It
only needs the Wii Remote. This entails walking around, talking to
people, and playing mini games. The down side is everything in Beastly
is so easy. I could consider it a kids game, but the rating moves it out
of that range. There are also very few new or innovative things to do in
Beastly. Everything in Beastly I have done on previous Wii titles. The
final issue is the length. Beastly can be beaten in a few hours. So most
gamers will classify Beastly as a rental for a weekend.
There was one mini game in Beastly that bothered me. That was casting
the spell on Kyle. I really could have done without that. I do
appreciate the main message in Beastly though. Look on the inside not
the outside. Jesus Christ taught that message, and it is one that we all
still need to be reminded of today. Beastly has some good points to it,
and some areas I believe it could have been improved upon.
