Another World

Want to know things that can make you feel
old? Games you remember from a long time ago having an anniversary.
Another World is having its 20th anniversary. Congratulations! The video
game industry could use your style of game play back in the lime light
on center stage. Modern gamers can find themselves perplexed by Another
World. What are they supposed to do? How do I progress? What is the
goal?
Oh my goodness I realized I forgot to mention an important fact about
Another World. This is on the iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad. DotEmu has
done a fantastic job of getting Another World down into the little hand
held, and the not so little hand held. This is a huge game for this
platform. I was extremely shocked when our wonderful PR contact told me
about it. This is like gettting Myst or Bible Adventures - extremely
well known games from the past.
The graphical style in Another World shows some blocky-ness. If that is
even a word. If not, I am making them up today. Stark colors contrast
exceptionally well in Another World. The animation is better than I was
expecting. Little worm like creatures crawl better than I expected them
to. There are two visual modes depending on how powerful your little
hand held is. There are violent images as your poor character Lester
Knight Chaykin can die. He can die in all kinds of ways. The goal is to
keep him alive.
The story is generally told in Another World with images. Lester is
performing an experiment that goes wrong, and winds up on another world.
If you are like me you probably dreamed about such things. Well that
dream was made into a video game. The music fits the theme of this game.
Parts of Another World can be quiet which make it feel lonely. In a lot
of ways that is how Lester is.
How good are you? How many video game skills do you have? Another World
will test them. It can take multiple tries to figure out how to solve a
certain area. If you are a glutton for punishment you can attempt to
play even harder versions of Another World. I am not one of those
gluttons. The price is $4.99 for Another World. That is a universal
download that works on iPhone/iPod Touch, and iPad.
Another World has two main control schemes. I played around with each of
them before deciding to go with the on screen control pad. This just
worked better for me. Others like to use the tapping control screen
method. Either way Another World plays great. I was concerned about that
when I first heard about this game. But my concerns were unfounded.
Another World will make players think. How to solve something, and when
to do what.
I love the goal of keeping Lester alive in Another World. Dying just
allows the player to restart that area. This can be annoying because
players have to repeat the same steps over and over again. On the flip
side it can lead the player to notice things they had previously missed.
The lessons I gleaned from Another World is there are a lot of things
that want to destroy me. I need to be vigilant to stay alive.
