The Last Airbender
SCORE: 70
I am not really sure what to think about the live action The Last
Airbender movie. The cartoon is interesting, but not all cartoons
translate well to live action. Few video games have translated well to
live action movies. The Last Airbender on the Wii is based on the live
action movie. From what I have seen the movie is going to get many
things from the anime series right. THQ was gracious enough to give
Family Friendly Gaming a reviewable copy.
The images in The Last Airbender are a lot darker than any of the
cartoon based games. There is quite a bit of violent content in The Last
Airbender. Players take on the role of Zuko, Aang, and the Blue Spirit
(technically one of the previously mentioned characters). Many of the
enemy character models are re-used. I also noticed certain rooms looked
similar after awhile as well.
The music is okay in The Last Airbender. I noticed some minor language
issues here and there. As long as you are following the 'T' for Teen
rating you should avoid children hearing language you do not want them
to hear. The voice acting in The Last Airbender sounded like lines being
read to me. With so many special powers there are quite a few sound
effects in this Wii game that fit the theme.
THQ included some neat unlockable content in The Last Airbender. There
is a nice gallery with plenty of pictures. Each level has numerous
challenges, and the player can work on achieving all of them. Arena mode
is for two players who want to compete to see who can get the highest
score. Players can complete The Last Airbender on the Wii in a long
weekend.
The Last Airbender starts out really good, and the game focuses on what
the player needs to do. As the game progresses the visual clues are not
always helpful. I found myself stuck in The Last Airbender in a couple
of spots. I checked with others here at Family Friendly Gaming to help
me figure those areas out. There were areas that took some of us various
ideas to get through. Improved hints would have helped this game
tremendously. The Last Airbender allows you (editor: when playing Aang)
to put enemies in little tornadoes and throw them into walls.
The Avatar is a reincarnated character which is a major part of the
storyline in The Last Airbender. The Fire Nation is an ultra aggressive
group that makes good bad guys. Zuko's original intent is to capture the
Avatar to regain his honor. Players get to spend a lot of this game
playing him. The story telling in The Last Airbender is interesting,
even though it is much more serious than the anime series. I would
advise parents to follow the Teen rating as a minimum.
