Shrek Forever After
SCORE: 83
The Nintendo DS version of
Shrek Forever After is based on the movie. Shrek is running ragged as a
father, and husband. He wishes he could have just one more day of fun
and excitement. So he makes a deal, and signs a contract. Unfortunately
he does not pay close enough attention. He gave up a day from his
childhood to earn his mid life crisis adult play day. The day he winds
up losing is his birthday. That completely alters the time line. So
Shrek goes on a quest in this game to right his mistake.
The Nintendo DS does not do this franchise any services. We can discern
what things are in Shrek Forever After, but their details are lacking.
There are also quite a few images that are recycled throughout this hand
held video game. Shrek Forever After contains a lot of violence. You
have to whack, smash, and belly flop on a lot of enemies. Certain doors
will not open until a certain number of enemies have been dispersed.
Their bodies do not stay around long, which is a good thing.
I really enjoyed the voice acting in Shrek Forever After. The characters
have various humorous comments after various events. There is some minor
language issues in Shrek Forever After. Some of it can be ambiguous, but
adults will come to their own conclusions. The music in Shrek Forever
After is good, and fits the theme. I also enjoyed the special effect
sounds in this DS game.
There is quite a bit of unlockable content in Shrek Forever After. This
ranges from mini games to character images. Each level has multiple
collectible items, some are easier to find than others. Shrek Forever
After has a nice length to the game to keep gamers busy for a few weeks.
My one complaint is the level length. Some levels can take ten minutes
to complete. That means Shrek Forever After is not a pick up, play for a
few minutes, and put down. Doing so will lose all your progress.
One of the coolest things about Shrek Forever After is the signs. They
give the players clues on what needs to be done to solve the puzzles. I
learned after a few levels the patterns of the puzzles and solved them
as quickly as possible. The level designs are cool, although some of the
secrets can annoy. Here is the problem. The camera changes to show me
the area when I get close, but not to get back out. So you wind up
jumping blindly. The saving grace for Shrek Forever After is you keep
the secret item after dying and going back to the last checkpoint.
Shrek Forever After has a wonderful lesson in it. That lesson is how
important family is. Sure we may get tired of working a job, running a
ministry, being a husband, and father. We would really miss that if it
was suddenly taken away. Family is a very important thing in our lives.
I feel blessed every day to count father, and husband as two of my life
jobs. A minor lesson in Shrek Forever After is to be careful with what
contracts we sign.
