Kikis Delivery Service
SCORE: 60
Kiki's Delivery Service is a coming of age story of a young girl
wanting to become a full-fledge witch. This anime classic was directed
by Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki (2002, Best Animated
Feature, SPIRITED AWAY). The original Japanese theatrical version was
released in 1989. The story of magic and high-flying adventure follows
KiKi as she meets new friends and discovers her inner witch. This 2-Disc
Special Edition DVD includes never-before-seen bonus features.
Joined by her black cat, Jiji, Kiki, flies to a new town and moves in
with a new friend. The story follows Kiki and Jiji as they meet new
friends and provide and service around town - making deliveries. As the
story begins, Kiki lacks confidence and is unsure of her self as a
witch, but she learns through friendships and life experiences that she
can become the witch she is destined to be.
The DVD menus are nicely layed out and easy to navigate. The
presentation and overall production of the movie itself is very good.
The English track is good and the talent include Kirsten Dunst and Phil
Hartman.
The movie itself is about becoming a witch. And while the story contains
some inspirational moments and encouraging dialogue amoung the
characters, one can not get away from the underling theme of witches. It
is going to be hard to recommend this to Family Friendly readers based
on the theme.
If you do choose to check out Kiki's Delivery Service, there will be
plenty of discussion points if watching with younger viewers - who may
be interested in the magic as presented in the movie. The magic is
presented as a means to happiness and finding who you really are, but we
know the Bible says Jesus Christ is the only one who can lead us to
happiness.
That being said, if you are a big Anime fan and enjoy these types of
movies, then you want to check it out. Otherwise, I would recommend
films like Jonah (from Veggie Tales) to learn about becoming who God
wants us to be.
