Costume Quest
SCORE: 58
Costume Quest is a downloadable home console game on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Family Friendly Gaming was given a code for the Xbox 360 version. This is a role playing game based on Halloween. In fact it is pretty apparent in the first few minutes of this game that the writer(s) love that holiday, and have created a video game that worships it. If that is not strange enough, well we will get there.
The artistic style of Costume Quest did nothing for this reviewer. The graphics are cartoonish, but have a real odd look to them. Many of the same character models are used over and over again. This is true for the turn based battle screens as well. Ghosts, goblins, witches, and more are all over Costume Quest.
Costume Quest tries its hand at plain speak, and some quirky humor. For some reason the WMG did not find the jokes funny in Costume Quest. There is a down to earth concept to the dialogue in Costume Quest. Brother and sister fight, mock one another. What is not realistic is the parents just ignoring it. Parents stop that kind of behavior all the time. There is also some political correctness in Costume Quest. This role playing game is completely and totally pro Halloween.
There are numerous quests in Costume Quest, but some need to be completed before others can be finished. There is little to no reason to replay Costume Quest. In fact most gamers this reviewer knows will be turned off by the core content of this game and avoid it. Since it is a downloadable game it costs less than most on the store shelves.
The game play is where Costume Quest gets really weird. Players get in battles, and turn into a giant robot, or a giant knight (at first). They then take turns fighting the monsters. Buttons can be pressed at exact moments (and this system is not very forgiving) to make them more powerful, or to defend better. Items can be purchased to improve stats, and leveling up increases them. This system gets boring extremely fast.
Halloween is the most controversial 'holiday' this reviewer knows. So
a game that is all rah rah Halloween is weird. Like propaganda from a
politician or something. The good side, and saving grace of Costume
Quest is the player is trying to save their sibling. The WMG thought
this game would be a lot different from what it was. This is definitely
an independent styled title that is out there.
