Chevrolet Camaro Wild Ride
SCORE: 57
Racing games have not had the best track record on the Nintendo DS. I am not sure why that is because games like Mario Kart show how it can be done. When Family Friendly Gaming received Chevrolet Camaro Wild Ride from our friends over at Storm City Games, I was pretty excited. Come on, we are talking Chevy here. Ford lovers may be unhappy, but Chevy fans, especially Camaro ones are jumping up and down when they realize they get to put the petal to the metal in this racing game.
Things started out so great when I started Chevrolet Camaro Wild Ride. The Storm City Games intro is really cool, and got the blood flowing. Just don't tell the doctor because of that high blood pressure thing okay? I got into my first race, and watched the other cars race off. I was hitting different buttons trying to find the gas. The 'L' and 'R' buttons are not used like other games, but thats okay. Well we will get to that in the game play section.
The menu screens look good in Chevrolet Camaro Wild Ride, and the ability to swap screens (top and bottom) is a neat little feature. The cars do not look so good. The race tracks are curvy enough, and don't correct the kings grammar. The backgrounds are okay, but slowing down, or stopping shows a lot of detail issues. Bumping other cars or getting bumped is a bouncing experience. The screen shakes when this happens. Chevrolet Camaro Wild Ride is the first DS game to give me car sickness thanks to the trampoline action.
The menu screens sound really good. I enjoyed listening to the background music while I was touching, or pressing buttons for my options. The revving of the engines in Chevrolet Camaro Wild Ride gets really annoying. In fact while racing that is the main sounds heard. Unless you crash into a wall, then you get a little special effect sound. Or in the competition levels where you ping pong with the other Chevy Camaro's. It was at this point I realized there is not a lot of diversity in the Chevy Camaro branch of that tree.
There are twelve different cars in Chevrolet Camaro Wild Ride, four different ways to race each of the nine tracks. These tracks are on three different continents. That is not a lot of tracks for a racing game. The sad part of my job is when I have to state things like that. There are plenty of other racing games on the Nintendo DS with more cars, more tracks, and more options. Players unlock content as they play, but most will be done in a few hours. Successfully completing challenges gives the player points which unlocks cars.
The game play in Chevrolet Camaro Wild Ride gave me fits. The reason is there is so little to do in very long tracks. The different challenges are pretty simple to breeze through, but beating that competition can be difficult. The computer races nearly perfect, and can never be put away. I would chase them down in the first lap being in second place. At the end of the second lap I was just behind the leader, and would finally take first in the third lap. Problem is the cars I had chased down previously came right along for the ride. Make one mistake near the end and its over. You have to place first in competition. Now the getting to a certain speed, hitting cones, and making checkpoints are all very easy to conquer.
This may seem weird but I would like a sequel to Chevrolet Camaro
Wild Ride. Maybe something like Camaro vs Mustang, and bring Ford into
it. Players are taught to concentrate, complete challenges, and win
races. There is no benefit to knocking other cars around, in fact it
winds up hurting you. Chevrolet Camaro Wild Ride is safe for all ages of
the family, but it may make them never want to purchase a Chevy. Storm
City Games has made some fun and family friendly titles in the past. Not
everything is going to be a home run. Babe Ruth struck out.
