Castle in the Sky
SCORE: 71
Castle in the Sky is a Disney DVD from Studio Ghibli. This anime
comes from director Hayao Miyazaki, and contains some well known voice
actors. The most well known is Mark Hamill. Sci-fi fans will be joined
by role playing game fans in taking an interest in this movie. Castle in
the Sky is the exploration of a fantastic world where there are
airships, and an ancient society long lost. Certain stones are very
powerful, and can do amazing things. Pazu finds a floating girl Sheeta
after the army and pirates are trying to steal her stone.
The animation is exceptional in Castle in the Sky. I loved the clouds,
as well as the industrial theme used in so many areas. There is violence
on this DVD. The army fights ancient robots, which leads to numerous
explosions. Thankfully those scenes are the exception instead of the
rule. I noticed some nice scenes where characters cared for one another.
Some of the violence is comical in nature, like when certain characters
get into a fist fight. There is some mild blood in Castle in the Sky.
The voice acting in Castle in the Sky is top notch. I dd not notice any
language issues. A few characters tell others to shut up, but that is
the worst I noticed. The music is great in Castle in the Sky. The
musical tones kept up with the characters unraveling the mysteries of
their world, and their past. I enjoyed various points of humor on this
DVD as well. I was not the only one as children were laughing at certain
points too.
I really enjoy seeing behind the scenes content, and Castle in the Sky
kept me happy. The reviewable package Disney sent Family Friendly Gaming
contained two discs. The second disc contained the bonuses. The
interviews were my personal favorite, and made the award winning
director a very approachable man. Before I forget John Lasseter has a
wonderful introduction to this movie.
There are some standard menu screens, and some really odd ones. Seeing
information on other Studio Ghibli films is like picking places off a
map. I was not sure what I was selecting until it came up. The storyline
in Castle in the Sky is just like playing a role playing game. There is
a lot of mystery that is unraveled slowly. The heroes wind up working
with different groups that you might not expect. Make it to the end and
you get a real good payoff learning quite a bit.
Pazu goes way out of his way to protect Sheeta. This is a very admirable
trait. They work together to find out the truth about the floating
castle as well as Sheeta's past. There are a few areas this movie left
the door open. An example would be why didn't the people destroy the
castle when they left it. Why leave it up there with all its weaponry?
The pirates turn out to be the good guys, and the army turns out to be
the bad guys. The representative of the government goes rogue, so I can
not see this movie blaming the government. I really enjoyed Castle in
the Sky even though it has a few issues with the violence.
