101-in-1 Sports Megamix
SCORE: 78
The 101-in-1 franchise is one of the most diverse franchises we have
ever reviewed here at Family Friendly Gaming. Our friends over at Atlus
provided us a copy of 101-in-1 Sports Megamix on the Nintendo DS for
this review. This hand held is stuff full of mini games. Some are quick
and simple, others take a little thought and effort. Play mini games,
score points, and use those points to purchase other mini games.
The really cool thing about 101-in-1 Sports Megamix is how this is a
game that can be picked up and played for a few minutes and then put
down. Or if you feel like playing longer it allows that as well. Each
mini game has a certain score that must be attained in order to beat it.
Others require the player win, like in a race. Some games require the
Nintendo DS be turned on its side.
Some of the graphics in 101-in-1 Sports Megamix surprised me. I noticed
some amazing details in some of them. Others were not so good. The view
point changed in many of the mini games. Some are from above, others
from the side, etc. There is some sports violence in 101-in-1 Sports
Megamix. Some examples are the boxing, and wrestling mini games. Don't
worry they are not complex, and I did not find any blood or gore while I
was playing.
The music in 101-in-1 Sports Megamix fits the theme, and works well for
this game. I enjoyed almost every special effect sound I came across in
this game. 101-in-1 Sports Megamix is encouraging when the player fails.
The game tells us to try again. It also gives the minimum score required
to complete that mini game.
If you are really good you could beat 101-in-1 Sports Megamix in a few
weeks. The mini games cost more as you go along, which requires more
play time. There is also a wireless multicard feature for up to two
players. There are some neat mini games in 101-in-1 Sports Megamix that
warrant the price of this hand held video game. Part of the fun of this
game is seeing what all is in here.
I got many hours of enjoyment out of 101-in-1 Sports Megamix on the
Nintendo DS. The controls are generally easy to comprehend. I had to try
a few of the mini games more than once to figure out exactly how to
play. I did not notice tutorials before the mini games. I may have
missed that though. There is an on screen assistance telling the player
to move the stylus left or right, up and down, etc. Sometimes there are
timed mini games, but telling me to tap the screen does not tell me to
tap at a certain interval or as fast as I can. I did figure it out
though. Well most of them.
The violence in 101-in-1 Sports Megamix is akin to Rock em Sock em
Robots in my opinion. I am surprised this got an E10+ rating from the
ESRB. I have seen them allow much worse in numerous 'E' rated games.
Concentration and competition are the two main lessons I got from
101-in-1 Sports Megamix on the DS. There are a lot of interesting
sports, and children can learn about the wild world of sports. I'm
sorry, I had to throw that in there. I hope to see sequels to this
franchise in the future.
