Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
SCORE: 90
Sports games have been hit and miss on the Nintendo DS. It is like developers and publishers are not sure how to use this innovative little machine. Sega has found the right formula with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. This hand held video game is part sports game, and part party game. The mixture of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mario the Plumber is really neat. I noticed certain levels had Mario items, and Sonic items. Sega merged their characters, and Nintendo’s characters masterfully.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games looks okay on the Nintendo DS. The animation of the characters is decent. Since this DS game is based on winter sports there is a lot of white. Thankfully Sega included various other colors. There is some mild violence in things like hockey. The majority of the events, and mini games in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games are clean and completely safe for the entire family.
The music in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is pretty good. I found myself listening to the cheerful music in a few areas just enjoying it. The special effect sounds work great, and fit the theme of this game masterfully. I did not hear any offensive sounds while playing Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. The mixture of the two franchises in the audio department works well too.
Sega packed Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games full of extras. I am amazed at how many unlockables there are in this DS game. Earning gold in every event will take multiple attempts. Up to four players can compete together in both Single Card mode, and Multi-Card modes. I believe Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is worth the price of admission.
I am pleased to find Sega included comprehensive controls for each of the events in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. If you have already played the event, you can skip the controls. I also appreciate how touch screen, and button controls were both utilized.
Mario & Sonic at the
Olympic Winter Games teaches kids how to compete. Sequels to this
Nintendo DS would be welcome here at Family Friendly Gaming. It was my
joy to play and review Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for the
DS. Families can play this game together too.
