Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom
SCORE: 82
Dora the Explorer has returned to the Wii and Playstation 2 in the form of Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom. This home console video game is a sequel to Dora the Explorer Dora saves the Snow Princess. A greedy king takes the four colored crystals, and then scatters the pages of the magical book. Dora has to retrieve the pages so she can magically enter the book. Boots accompanies her, and has a larger role in this game. In fact in certain areas the player gets to completely control Boots.
The graphics in Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom are a slight improvement over the past game. There are diverse environments, and better colors. At a certain point in the game all the colors are taken away. Dora must finish specific levels to retrieve a color. Then as she continues through levels that color is added to the graphics. A rather cool concept for a kids game. Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom continues its non-violent ways.
Verbals, as well as visual instructions are given in Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom. These can be skipped, and did become a little overbearing. Instructions come up everytime you come across an interactable item the first time. The problem is many of these items are similar so it really added to the length of the levels.
2K Play included some fun little extra mini games that are sure to please children. The length of Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom is long enough to keep young children engaged for a couple of weeks. Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom contains different paths and a lot of items that can be collected. Get all of a certain item in a level and you get a sticker. It would great if that sticker could somehow be printed out or something.
Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom contains very simple controls. Tilt the Wii Remote one way to move right, and the other way to move left. The ‘2’ button is used to interact with items, and for jumping. Specific Wii Remote motions are needed after interaction with certain items. There are a lot of items that can be interacted with. 2K Play also included various paths that children can explore. Children generally found Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom to be fun, however I noticed a few that walked away from the game. They thought levels were too long.
There is one aspect of Dora saves the Crystal Kingdom that could be
considered controversial. The dragon flies over to the knight and they
start fighting. Dora’s solution is to steal the knights sword. The
dragon stops fighting because he was scared of the sword. The dragon
could have flown away, and I do not see how taking away one sides
weapon, and leaving the other side armed stops the fighting. I the real
world that leads to one side getting slaughtered.
