Tak and the Guardians of Gross
SCORE: 62
Tak and the Guardians of Gross is on the Nintendo Wii, and
Playstation 2. The WMG was not sure how to take this platformer at
first. In a lot of ways Tak and the Guardians of Gross feels like a game
from a few years back, and is out of step with where the video game
industry has been going. Tak is a magic wielding character who tries to
be humorous, and makes a lot of mistakes because he does not listen to
others. In fact that stems from his bad attitude.
The WMG was surprised to see some female characters dressed in such a
way in this video game. Tak and the Guardians of Gross has a lot of
jungle colors, and quite a few gross images (editor: to match the name
of the title). There are parts of levels where there is fighting, and
even some shooting levels. The violence was not surprising, but the
magical content was. Tak makes a mess of things, and works at correcting
his mistake.
Tak and the Guardians of Gross has a few language issues the WMG was not happy to hear. In a way the phrase used over and over again reminds of Shadow the Hedgehog. The words are not as bad, but still not ones the WMG wants children to be repeating. The sounds are also where a lot of the main characters bad attitude, and insults comes from. Tak and the Guardians of Gross certainly does not teach respect. On the plus side a certain female character dressed to entice to lust is called trashy.
There are some mini games included in Tak and the Guardians of Gross
that could give the player some replay value. The WMG found little
reason to replay any of the levels. Tak and the Guardians of Gross is
like a lot of platformers from the last few years, and honestly there is
not a lot new, innovative, or interesting to warrant it. To the WMG the
era of the major attitude platform character has passed. Tak is just not
funny, which leaves him in a weird limbo.
Tak and the Guardians of Gross controls the way it should, and levels
almost always make sense. Most of the levels get repetitive, and quite
honestly boring after a bit. Part of the problem is some of them are way
too long, and too easy. There are some levels that are challenging, but
by that point the WMG was ready to be done. The WMG was hoping to have
fun with Tak and the Guardians of Gross, but sadly wound up
disappointed.
The WMG wishes Tak and the Guardians of Gross could have been a better
role model for kids. Tak does work on correcting his mistake, but it
seems he is more interesting in not getting in trouble than doing the
right thing. The WMG hates to say it, but this franchise needs to stay
in the jungle unless there is a major attitude correction. The WMG was
embarrassed to be seen playing Tak and the Guardians of Gross.
