Pet Pals Animal Doctor

Pet Pals Animal Doctor from Majesco Entertainment is one of the more interesting Nintendo DS video games I have played recently. The player takes on the role of a new veterinarian. A more experienced vet is there to assist the player. The game also gives guidance in what to check next. There are thirty different real life medical cases along with twenty-three different animals. The more exotic the animal the more interesting it was to diagnose their problem. Majesco Entertainment also made sure there were plenty of owner personalities; that range from scared to bizarre.

Pet Pals Animal Doctor has some realistic models of animals from quite a few different angles. The different instruments used also look realistic. There is some images of blood, and an occasional surgery in case you are squeamish. The game makes great use of color in all but one spot. When certain instruments are filled a green bar fills up on a different colored green background. I would have preferred an offsetting color. There is little animation of the animals in this game.

Pet Pals Animal Doctor has some very pleasant music. It is also interesting to hear the animals make noises during procedures. Certain checks would grant a whimper from a dog for example. This game grants animals the same care that people receive in the doctor’s office, or hospital (editor: better in some cases). I did not find any offensive sounds.

There are five major levels of patients that await the player. There was some fun little mini games included. The main drawback to Pet Pals Animal Doctor is replay value. If you even thinking about becoming a vet, this is a great game. Or if you are interested in learning more about animals and afflictions they may get.

The hint mode was certainly needed by me at the beginning. After awhile though I learned the tests, and even scored a few perfects. I must have hit certain similar cases in close proximity, because I would up using many of the same instruments over and over again in a linear way. Maybe that is how it is with real vets.

Pet Pals Animal Doctor is a video game that is safe for the whole family. The few instances of surgery were few and far between, but worth a mention. I would love to see a sequel to this video game, especially if more animals, and different cases are included. Another improvement would be letting the player try tests in their own order.
