Mini RC Rally
SCORE: 68
Mini RC Rally on the Nintendo DS is one of those games that looks really good on paper. Small cars racing around on neat tracks that everyone in the family can enjoy. Problem is though the execution, and programming of said idea can sometimes be a more difficult task than coming up with a good idea. As you read the WMG’s review of this game you will quickly realize where this game went wrong.
Graphically this game looks like it belongs on the Gameboy Advance not the Nintendo DS. There are some nice colors, but too many of them are bland. There are not a lot of details, and what is there, is very repetitive. The camera really hurts the player. Going under a log can completely obstruct the view, and cause the player to crash into a wall. Speaking of hitting (editor: or even grazing) something it brings the cute little cars to an instant stop. Those stops mean a race is lost.
Summitsoft could not get the sounds right in Mini RC Rally either. Which to the WMG is baffling. How those classic sounds of RC Pro-am could not be captures is beyond the WMG’s little brain. The sounds are not always clear, and there are quite a few annoying sounds in this game. The music is okay, but it says a lot for a game when mediocre music is one of the best things it has going for it.
If you are wise (translation: read Family Friendly Gaming before making a purchase) you will avoid playing this game. Replaying Mini RC Rally is painful, more painful than playing it at first. Once one has played this game, questions come to mind. The WMG wonders how such a game could make it to the market? The WMG will be blunt, this game is not worth your hard earned dollars (even though it can be found for ten US Dollars). More than one person can play it at a time, and if you have four people playing it then a real live human can actually win a race.
Put on that helmet, buckle that seat belt because the WMG has only been warming up until getting to the Gameplay section (editor: but there was some foreshadowing for those paying attention). One mistake in a race means the entire race is completely lost. In fact the WMG is not even sure if it is possible to win a race (editor: this was verified by multiple staffers at Family Friendly Gaming). The controls are tight, along with the camera issues make Mini RC Rally an almost impossible game to control. Somehow the computer controlled vehicles seem to have teflon on their tires, whereas the player is driving on oil. The WMG had no fun playing this game.
In case you were
wondering, there is no way this game should get a sequel - EVAR! Any
game that uses the Micro Machines kind of concept needs to be built from
the ground up. Morally, and ethically this is a decent game. Why is it
though when some developers make a good game for families that they
leave out everything else? Mini RC Rally is safe for the entire family,
but the WMG would not recommend this game to anyone - not even the WMG’s
worst enemy. Please listen to the WMG and leave this game in the bargain
bin.
