Major League Baseball 2K7
SCORE: 73
As I am writing this review the boys of summer are in full swing on the baseball diamond all across America. So I decided to give Major League Baseball 2K7 on the Nintendo DS a whirl. 2K Sports has been one of my more favorite sports video game developers for quite some time. They may not always have the most flashy graphics, but they certainly do build a solid sports game. Usually that is. Add into the mix that there have been few worthwhile sports games on any hand held and I was hoping that playing this game would not be a mistake.
I have played my share of sports games that do not look that great, and Major League Baseball 2K7 on the Nintendo DS certainly falls into that category. The pitching/batting screen has nice big graphics, but the rest are really bad. The fans do not look good, the fielders do not look good, there only seems to be one stadium in the entire game, and well you are getting the picture. If you don’t believe me, then just look at a picture of the game. There are also a problem with the few colors being used, and most of the game feeling rather bland. I did not find any offensive images though.
I have grown used to announcers when I play my sports games. Even if those announcers get the call(s) wrong, at least they are there talking. Their chitter chatter makes it feel like watching a game on television, or actually being in the stadium. Major League Baseball 2K7 does not even have crickets chirping. There are some canned cheers when a home run is hit, but aside from that, forget about it. I understand the Nintendo DS is a hand held, but even games on other systems with similar hardware had better sounds than this one. I did not hear any offensive sounds in this game.
Sports games generally have a very good replay value to them. The main replay value in Major League Baseball 2K7 is figuring out how to hit and pitch. If you find that to be fun, then this bargain priced video game may be up your alley. More than one player can play this game at once via the wireless feature. There are no player trades, or other management kind of decisions allowed.
The touch screen features work extremely well in Major League Baseball 2K7. The fielding is a completely different story. In fact my outfielders always seemed to be playing in the wrong area. Why they would play a powerhouse in close made no sense, nor could I find a way to make an adjustment to correct their mistakes. This leads to all kinds of frustration that really should not be present in a baseball game.
Major League Baseball 2K7
can be forgiven for not having much graphics, stadiums, and no player
trades. But in the long run I would much rather watch (editor: or even
participate) in a real baseball game, than to play this game. The only
sequels that 2K Sports need to make need to be a complete overhaul, and
redesign. I know they could get more into a Nintendo DS game.
