Kirby Squeak Squad
SCORE: 73
True believers of the original Kirby Gameboy video games have been disappointed with many of the recent Kirby video game releases. I have heard some of their comments, and they have not been kind. Nintendo listened to ya’ll, just as they listen to Family Friendly Gaming. Kirby Squeak Squad on the Nintendo DS returns Kirby to his traditional roots. Ya’ll know how we at Family Friendly Gaming feel about a return to traditional roots.
The bright and colorful graphics found within Kirby Squeak Squad are nice to see. The character models are a little small for my taste, but that also goes along with the original Kirby video games. Similar to Yoshi, Kirby can suck in enemies. The difference is Kirby can swallow them and he will be granted some powers (and his outfit will change) that relates to the enemy just inhaled. The bottom screen of the Nintendo DS is Kirby’s stomach where items can be held. These items can also be mixed to create different items like a 1-up for the player. The cartoon violence has to do with Kirby dispatching of the enemies in a variety of ways. There are a lot more enemies than previous versions of Kirby, and that leads to a higher volume of the violence.
The sounds in Kirby Squeak Squad are very pleasant. Nintendo has done a good job over the years with the musical scores, and there is a light hearted theme to this game. These sounds are crisp and clear. All of the sounds work well with this game. I did not find any offensive sounds in this game.
Kirby Squeak Squad is on the easy side, with few reasons to replay the game. There are some multiplayer games that are the saving grace for this game. If you are looking for a light hearted video game on the Nintendo DS that has cartoon violence in it, then this may be one to invest your money in.
Kirby controls quite well, but bear in mind getting certain skills will change how he controls. The touch aspect of the bottom screen works nicely. Nintendo made Kirby Squeak Squad handle very quick and responsive. I generally like how the controls are laid out, but a few like giving up a power were a little more difficult to get working. Thankfully this game is on the easy side so I was rarely in danger. I did not find Kirby Squeak Squad fun to play, but it also was not a chore - more of an average way to spend my time.
Kirby is going after the
thieves who stole his shortcake. He is not interested in revenge, but in
getting his food returned to him. With all of the enemies he eats it is
a wonder he has any interest in the shortcake. I would like to see a
sequel to Kirby Squeak Squad, especially if they tone down the violence
a little bit, and make the game more challenging - like do away with
unlimited flying.
