Madden NFL 13 Vita

If you own a PlayStation Vita, then you are well aware of the launch of the Madden 13 demo. That is because this is the only news to hit the Vita in some time. I am one of those gamers - and believe me there are plenty - that purchased the Vita for sports gaming...and primarily Madden from EA Sport. Not to put any pressure on EA, but a lot of Vita owners are waging their bets on the success of this franchise. So, how does Madden 13 look so far? To quote a long time sports broadcaster..."It could go all the way!"

The demo gives gamers the opportunity to play a rematch of the Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants. Some settings can be changed such as game difficulty and team play books, but quarter length and almost every other setting is unavailable for the demo.

Madden 13 for the Vita brings next gen graphics and gameplay to a handheld device. And compared to any and every other handheld device on the market there is absolutely no comparison. The graphics are sharp and crisp. Player animations run smooth. I sat back and admired at times what I was watching...PS3 graphics on a 5 inch OLED screen in my hand.

Features EA included specific for the Vita include touch screen smart routes for receivers and defenders. I was immediately hooked on using the front touch screen for creating routes. This feature was very easy to use and a lot of fun. Actually, all features using the front and back touch screens were user friendly and truly felt part of the game - not forced or gimmicky.

There were a few things that jumped out at me that I am hoping will be addressed by the release date. First, the Vita version does not include the major gameplay changes that are presented in the console version. However, that is not a huge issue for me as this is the first installment on the Vita and it has plenty to offer on its own.

Secondly, when trying to do a manual replay after a sack-fumble of Tom Brady the replay would not work. The rotation control allowed for the camera to turn, but none of the other controls of the replay worked. Also, there were several times when cut scenes showed players on the sidelines without numbers on their jerseys. And lastly, there was some slowdown and lag when a lot was going on, but none of these items really took away from the overall experience of the gameplay.

Having been a fan of Madden for 20+ years, it is an awesome experience to see it come to the Vita with next graphics and gameplay functionality. EA Sports did a great job putting this demo together. If this demo is any indication of what the full game has in store, then there is no doubt it will "go all the way". {08/15/2012} -Alan
