Bolt of Whalington Demo
Family Friendly Gaming News
MELBOURNE, Australia — November 5, in the year of our Lord
2026 — Orca Studio and UltraPlayers today released a free
Steam demo for Bolt of Whalington, the exploration-first
Metroidvania in which a Siamese cat and his mech explore a floating
whale-city that doesn't always play by its own rules. At mysterious
Rule Terminals, players can hack the world and change how things
work. Elsewhere, familiar objects reveal unexpected uses, obstacles
invite creative solutions, and each new area brings fresh mechanics
to discover. The demo is available now on Steam.
What's in the Free Demo?
The free demo invites players to explore four areas of Whalington:
Sardine, Kitchen, Cabins, and Residence, featuring the complete
Kitchen area alongside portions of the other three.
Expect 60–90 minutes on the main path, or up to 2.5 hours for
players who chase every secret.
*The trailer & the introduction also features content from the full
game that is not available in the demo.
Hack the World
At Rule Terminals found in Whalington, players can rewrite certain
rules of the world. Turn a cat into a rat, transform HP into keys,
or discover entirely new ways to interact with the environment.
And rule hacking is only one of Whalington's surprises.
Across the wider adventure, players will encounter gravity-defying
environments where walls become paths, mysterious platforms that
react to light, and other mechanics that challenge their
expectations.
Rather than repeating the same tricks, each region introduces its
own ideas, with new interactions to understand and discoveries to
make. Just when players think they know what to expect, the game
changes the question.
"We wanted Bolt of Whalington to feel like a world you can poke at,
with a cat, a mech and a floating whale-city full of things that
don't always behave the way you expect," said Josh, Founder and
Producer at Orca Studio.
Familiar Things, Unexpected Results
In Whalington, ordinary objects rarely do only what they seem to. A
wall that looks solid may give way to a little soap. A room that
appears sealed may have another way in.
Sometimes, there's more than one way to reach the same goal.
Take a catnip can hanging just out of reach. One player might launch
Bolt from his mech at the peak of a jump, while another uses shotgun
recoil to gain extra height. And those aren't necessarily the only
solutions.
Many puzzles and traversal challenges reward players who experiment
with their abilities, equipment, and surroundings, rather than
simply searching for one intended answer.
“When two players can reach the same goal in different ways,
exploration starts to feel more personal and surprising,” said
Harry, Publishing Director at UltraPlayers.
One Cat. One Mech. More Possibilities.
Bolt and his mech aren't simply two forms of the same character.
Both can exist in the world at the same time, allowing players to
switch between them and combine their different abilities.
Bolt's feline agility lets him slip through narrow spaces and reach
places his mech cannot, while the mech brings powerful equipment and
abilities of its own. Learning how the two interact with the
environment opens up new possibilities for traversal, puzzles, and
exploration.
Explore First, Fight Smarter
Whalington's formidable bosses each bring their own patterns,
challenges, and surprises. But quick reflexes aren't the only
advantage players can bring into battle.
A passing NPC remark, a forgotten scroll, or an item description
might reveal an enemy's weakness. Hidden upgrades and new equipment
can also change the options available when a fight begins.
Sometimes, the smartest way forward is to explore a little further
first.
Your Curiosity Starts Here
The free Steam demo is available now, inviting players to explore
Whalington, experiment with its unusual mechanics, and discover what
makes this Metroidvania different.
Curiosity doesn't kill the cat. It opens new doors.
