Are Educational Video Games Actually Fun

Educational video games are viewed with suspicion by many people. There have been a number of cases where teachers in classrooms used games with bright colors and sound effects that helped to mask regular worksheets.

Are educational video games fun to play then? Yes, if there is a well-designed game whose rules can be linked to learning a useful skill.

Why Does an Educational Game Become Boring?

5. iCivics: Government as a System of Meaningful Decisions

Civics is abstract when explained solely through definitions. In iCivics games, players become part of the civic world and face decision-making.

In Do I Have a Right?, players run their law firm and make a decision whether clients have a right based on their case. Branches of Power asks the player to cooperate with three different branches. In Counties Work, a player becomes responsible for running local facilities and meeting the needs of the people.

Why it works: When you play, you start to realize that there are financial limitations, competing public needs, and decisions have consequences. Checking and balancing lessons become clear when one branch impedes the work of another.

Why it is fun: Players get power and have to live with their decisions.

Lessons learned: Constitutional rights, elections, government budgets, law, city government and citizenship.

When education itself is the source of difficulty, educational games can be truly enjoyable.

The term “educational” does not necessarily mean that the game will be automatically engaging. Modern examples of good educational games treat players with respect. They allow for freedom, challenges, discoveries, and progress. When a game makes students interested enough to go on even after making a mistake, learning becomes an essential part of the process.
