Draw Something cracks 100 million drawings in less than 3 weeks
NEW YORK – FEBRUARY 28, in the year of our Lord 2012
- OMGPOP the leading developer and publisher of social
and mobile games, announced today that its viral, smash hit,
Draw Something has been downloaded over 4 million times and has
reached #1 in multiple iTunes App Store categories, including:
#1 Free App, #1 Paid App, #1 Word Game, and #1 Puzzle Game.
It has rapidly grown from more than a game to something of a
national obsession, taking over entire schools, workplaces and
even whole countries. In Sweden, 1 out of 5 iPhone users have
downloaded the application.
“We have been shocked at how fast it has grown,” said CEO Dan
Porter. “And the usage has been insane. We are seeing 1 million
drawings made every hour.”
With almost no press coverage whatsoever the game has become a
phenomenon by exploding on social media platforms such as
Twitter and Instagram. “People are taking to these social
channels to share their drawings, and that is causing the game
to spread,” said Porter. Celebrities from Questlove to My
Chemical Romance have been drawing and tweeting about the game
as well.
The Company has moved over 40 people to work on supporting the
game and a rash of features are expected in the next few weeks.
“We have at least two similar types of games we are holding off
on releasing as well,” said Porter.
Draw Something is available in a free-to-play, ad supported
version for Android and iOS, which also includes an elegant iPad
optimized version (Draw Something Free). Players who upgrade to
the premium version (Draw Something by OMGPOP) for a limited
time price of $0.99 will enjoy an ad-free gaming experience and
larger word list. In-app purchases available on both versions
include hints and additional color palettes.
