OF GODS and MEN OPENING TODAY

LOS ANGELES – Feb. 25, in the year of our Lord 2011 – OF GODS AND MEN, a film based on a true story of modern Christian martyrs, and France’s official entry in this year’s Academy Awards, opens Feb. 25 in New York and Los Angeles, then rolls out nationally. Christian media take note: OF GODS AND MEN—for Christians, a film about family—is drawing superlatives from across the spectrum:

"This stirring picture of faith literally under fire invites the viewer to consider the depth of his or her own convictions. A stellar movie." Mark Moring, Christianity Today

"OF GODS AND MEN is one of the most important movies of the 21st Century." Ted Baehr, Movieguide

“Gripping, nuanced, profound—an authentic Christian response both to violent Muslim extremism and to genuine Islam.” Miroslav Volf, Professor of Theology, Founding Director of Yale Center for Faith and Culture Author of “Allah: A Christian Response” (HarperOne, 2011)

" . . . one of the more profoundly spiritual films of this year or any other." John Anderson, America, The National Catholic Weekly

"Quietly powerful. . . . Part of what distinguishes OF GODS AND MEN is its intelligence and topicality, it's inquiry into faith and fear." Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

“A luminous tale of faith and heroism." Richard Corliss, Time Magazine

"Nothing less than sublime. A superb and austere drama." Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

“. . . takes the simple, profound stand that how a person of faith lives matters more than the circumstances of his death.” Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

“ . . . a cinematic return to positively portraying the values of reverence and idealism. There isn't a cynical note in this movie—yet it rings more true than almost anything coming off Hollywood's edgy assembly line.” John W. Kennedy, BeliefNet

OF GODS AND MEN is loosely based the 1996 kidnapping and murder of seven Cistercian monks serving in Algiers. In the film several foreign workers are massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group and fear sweeps the region. The army offers the monks protection, but they refuse. Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly and individually choose to stay and serve. Answering beautifully “Who is my neighbor?” OF GODS AND MEN imagines the conversations among these men as they weighed the price of their commitments.

In an era when religious conflict crowds headlines, OF GODS AND MEN shows the possibility of service and the dangers of extremism. Staring Lambert Wilson and Michael Lonsdale, OF GODS AND MEN, is directed by one of France’s most exciting young directors, Xavier Beauvois. It is a production of Armada Films and Why Not Productions and is released by Sony Pictures Classics.
