Chicken Little Ace in Action

There are some interesting days here at Family Friendly Gaming, especially when a game like Chicken Little: Ace in Action on the Nintendo DS come across my desk. I was expecting a completely different game than the one that booted up. This is an ‘E’ (for Everyone rating by the ESRB) shooter. For those not familiar with the term shooter, let me explain. The player uses Ace, a tank (Runt), or a space ship (Abby) to shoot everything out of the way. The firing is based on the different buttons on the DS (the ‘X’ button fires up, the ‘B’ button fires down, the ‘Y’ button fires to the left, and the ‘A’ button fires to the right). Players can hold the button down, and then just worry about lining up their shots, and avoiding incoming fire. Can you help Ace save the world from Foxy Loxy?

Graphically Chicken Little: Ace in Action does a very nice job with the 3D graphics. The system can easily handle all of the enemies, and assortment of other items on the screen without any slow down whatsoever. Much of the graphics are bright and colorful. The cut scenes are spectacular. There is fantasy violence as the robots are done away with via shooting them with a laser blaster. Enemies explode when they are shot enough times. There is a female character that has her gender defined, but not to the level of lustful.

The sounds are very crisp and clear in Chicken Little: Ace in Action. The music is pretty good, and I found myself enjoying it. The constant blasting away at the enemies, and having them explode so often did begin to grate upon my last good nerve a few times.

Buena Vista Games included a very nice amount of upgrades for the player to become even more powerful. There is also mini games that can be played wirelessly with friends. The length of Chicken Little: Ace in Action is actually nice, and some of the levels felt a wee bit too long to me. The difficulty of this game is pretty easy, and I only wound up dying a couple of times. It is geared more towards kids whose parents have no problem with a shooter. If you are seriously into Chicken Little and/or like hand held shooters, then give this game a look.

The controls are delayed a little as the character moves their weapon to the new direction before firing begins. The control scheme take a few minutes to get used to, but work amazingly well. The designs of the levels are linear to a fault. Some variety there would have been nice. I personally did not have much fun with this one, but that has to do with holding a specific button making the experience feel pretty mindless.

Morally speaking this is a fantasy (sci-fi) war game where the player wades through waves upon waves of robotic enemies to stop their evil scheme of taking over the universe. How you feel about using violence to solve problems will most likely dictate your reaction to Chicken Little: Ace in Action. It is a light hearted shooter, and there is plenty of poultry humor in the cut scenes. It does teach the lesson of standing up against evil, and standing for justice.
