Trainz Driver

There is something captivating about trains. Kids love to play with them. Adults love to work with sets and models. Video games work to capture the feel of driving a train cross country. It was a real honor and a pleasure for me to play and review Trainz Driver on the iPhone/iPod Touch platform. This portable game is also on the iPad.

The first thing I noticed in Trainz Driver was how good the tutorial was. The game lets family members skip it, but I found it important to learn how to play this game properly. Like avoid speeding. Learn how to stop at the station. By the way, stopping these huge machines is not the easiest thing in the world. It takes some planning ahead of time.

The graphics in this hand held game look way better than I was anticipating. The wide variety of different camera modes and angles is impressive in Trainz Driver. All of the instruments inside the cabs of the trains can be overwhelming. Thankfully Trainz Driver provides simplified controls for those of us not educated on the inner workings of a train.

What about kids? How family friendly is Trainz Driver for kids? Kids love Trainz Driver, and it is very safe for them. My youngest son gets a kick out of playing this iPhone/iPod Touch game. He does not always stop for the passengers but he has a good time nonetheless.

Trainz Driver is more realistic than I was expecting as well. The clickety-clack of the train as it goes down the tracks. The horns, and bells to warn drivers and pedestrians of the arrival of a train. The speed limits in different areas, and how long it takes the train to slow down. Again these things do not stop on a dime.

My only complaint about Trainz Driver is it is difficult to keep your speed steady. This may be part of the design of the game to make sure the player is always engaged. I would get to the speed limit, go over, and then drop down. I would then climb back up again, go over, and go back down. Based on the design of the controls keeping it in one spot was difficult.
