Star Trek
SCORE: 62
Trekkies have been wanting a good Star
Trek game for some time. There is heated debate on past Star Trek games.
The technology is now here to provide a movie quality experience. Except
its a video game and not a movie. This is where Star Trek on the
PC/PS3/Xbox 360 trips up. It wants to be both at the same time. Yet
movies and games are different.
Star Trek excels at telling a wonderful story. This feels like a Star
Trek story from start to finish. We go out as Kirk and Spock. They work
together as a team. The rest of the crew supports them from a variety of
safe(ish) locations - like the Starship Enterprise. We investigate, and
explore in portions of this home console video game.
We also have a lot of fighting to do. After playing through Star Trek
you will be sick to death of shooting things. Not only shooting things
but having to hide behind objects so often. This really slows down the
story in Star Trek. The bad guys looked so similar that I could care
less how many thousands I had murdered. I was starting to think I was
committing genocide against them.
I know some others have complained about the graphics in Star Trek. I
did not mind them. They do get repetitive, and many areas look similar.
Shooting these Gorn look similar too. As does taking hits and falling
down. Thankfully Star Trek is kind in this area. If one of the two main
characters are alive they can come over and revive the other one. That
saved me from some level repeats.
There are tons of commands in Star Trek. It took me a few hours to get
them all down. At first I kept pulling out the tricorder instead of the
phaser. Eventually I got a good flow going. Learning new things in Star
Trek can be painful. Puzzles seem to be impossible at first. I would
finally figure it out and wonder why I did not think of that
before. Star Trek points players in the right way sometimes and expects
players to know what to do in others.
I got a headache from the camera while playing Star Trek. This is game
that is best played with two players, but that split screen is hard to
deal with. The computer does a good job of controlling the other
character so the one player experience is fine. The computer will even help take out
the enemies. In a few rooms I hid and let Spock take them all out for
me.
It is a real treat to hear the voices of the real actors and actresses
in Star Trek. I enjoyed listen to them explain things and banter around.
I was surprised to hear bad language in Star Trek. It was really not
needed and brings this game down. Shooting all the Gorn over and over
again is one thing I would love to see fixed in a sequel.
