Time of Heroes

I have always been a fan of the turn based strategy role playing games. All the way back to Shining Force. Which is the stick I use to measure all games in this genre. Time of Heroes obviously learned some things from past games, and it has brought some interesting new concepts to the genre. The most important thing is the realistic sounding story. Your people have come to a new land, and are just trying to survive. Like the Pilgrims in the Americas.

The problem the people in Time of Heroes have is trolls, orcs and other such monsters want to kill them. The fighting in Time of Heroes is not because you want to kill thousands of monsters. You are just trying to carve a little bit of the area for your people. They are the ones who decide you must all die. It is much easier to sympathize with the people in Time of Heroes.

Visually the 3D looks pretty decent in Time of Heroes. This hand held game allows us to zoom in and out. Which is needed in many of the battles. It can become confusing who is on your team, and who has already moved in a turn. There is some blood in the battle scenes. Characters will fight it out for a few seconds before one runs away.

The music in Time of Heroes is fun. I enjoyed listening to it while playing this game. In many ways Time of Heroes feels like a PC game that was made for the iPhone/iPod Touch instead. There are stats and other data on the characters that goes way beyond what I was expecting. The battle sounds can grow thin after a few maps are defeated. Especially the violent ones.

Right now Time of Heroes is selling for ninety-nine cents. This is a steal for the eight to ten hours of game play. Family Friendly Gaming was provided a reviewable copy of Time of Heroes. The skill trees, six heroes, and six playable units will definitely keep you engaged. Time of Heroes includes three different difficulties based on your skill set.

The one complaint I have concerning Time of Heroes is the controls. I got slaughtered in the first level because I did not realize I had to add all of my units to my hero before going into battle. I also ran into issues with attacking. I would touch on the character I would want to attack, and get an 'X' button instead of a screen to attack that character. These are minor irritations, but still present. I also noticed certain characters can stand in the way if you are attacking from the side. Selecting that enemy can be frustrating as well. Because your other character is in between the camera and them.

All in all Time of Heroes is a good start for smuttlewerk interactive. I appreciate the amount of detail, and amount of content they put into this iPhone/iPod Touch game. I am eager to see what they come up with in the future.
