The Next Space

Any fan of retro gaming knows SNK for their famous Neo-Geo pocket, which in my opinion is one of the best 90’s handheld systems. SNK had its golden age with awesome arcade titles like “Metal Slug”, “Shock Troopers” and “The King of Fighters '94”. Now they are releasing 2 more arcade classics, “Chopper 1” and “The Next Space”, on the PSP and PS3.

As soon as I started playing “The Next Space”, it reminded me of the old arcade space-shooters like Defender; where you control a spaceship and you have to shoot down other enemies using your bullets plus the special powers that you can earn by taking power-ups that appear on the screen. With really well-made arcade graphics (probably early 16 bits graphics) this game defines what it was to be and old arcade space-shooter. The soundtrack of the game is probably my favorite part of the whole game; it makes you feel like you are in the 90’s again.

The game is really hard, so if you are not familiarized with arcade games, be sure to change the difficulty to easy, and away from only 5 lives. The continues are unlimited so there is no excuse to not finish the game. It took me around 30 minutes to finish it on the PS3, using a lot of credits. It can be a little frustrating at times with a bazillions bullets flying on the screen. You can also save your game at any point and put the game on normal screen or stretched screen.

Overall, The Next Space is what you expect, a really brutal arcade space-shooter who will make you throw your controller at times because of how hard it is. Although there is no blood or profanity in this game, I would personally not recommend this game for little kids because of how hard it is, but if you are a fan of arcade games and want to take a trip back to the past, be sure to check this title out. - Miluma

Take into consideration that the score of this game is based on the late 80’s games at the time and not based on today’s games.
